Jan van Haasteren Puzzle 'At the Hairdresser'

I made the puzzle 'At the Hairdresser'. This is number 20070, issue in 2022 on July 2. This is a very special puzzle, because this is the first puzzle drawn by the new artist of the Jan van Haasteren studio† And this new artist was announced on June 13, 2022. The artist is Mars Gremmen† Until now made Dick Heins, Robert Derks en Jan van Haasteren part of the Studio Jan van Haasteren. It's this puzzle:

and this is the box:
Jan van Haasteren at the hairdresser box

What went 'wrong' with this puzzle?

For this puzzle, there were a few items that the creators would have liked to do differently. What went 'wrong' with the first puzzle of Mars Greken? Two things.
1. No Kingfisher
Create a fixed recurring element from Mars Greken is a Kingfisher, however he accidentally forgot to draw it on this first puzzle.
2. The box does not match the contents of the box
Huh, what and how?? From April 9, 2022, Jumbo wants to deliver all puzzles in a 100% green variant (recognizable by the '100% recyclable' logo). Which means:
– the puzzle pieces are not in a plastic bag, but in a paper bag
– no cellophane around the box, but the box is attached with small round plastic stickers
The above two points were not made when this puzzle was produced. So: the first puzzles of Mars Greken 'At the Hairdresser' are not a 100% green variant. HOWEVER: it does say this on the box, but it is not so. The first versions of these puzzles will therefore appear in cellophane AND with the logo '100% recyclable'.
What does Jumbo communicate? “The next production will again be made with the plastic sealing stickers and with a paper bag”

Would you like to know more via a video about the '100% recyclable' logo?
I made a video about this with the first puzzle that appeared in this variant, which is 'Fair of the Future':

Also in a video – what went wrong?

I also summarized the above story in a video. Very special this puzzle:

Laying the puzzle

It is a very fun puzzle to make, because there are funny events at the hairdresser. Mars has made it a very nice and challenging puzzle. I made this puzzle on a rubber puzzle mat. I always start by sorting the straight pieces and explaining the pieces on the puzzle mat:
Jan van Haasteren at the hairdresser's box and mat and pieces sorted
It is often exciting whether I have sorted all the straights, but it went well:
Jan van Haasteren laid straight pieces at the hairdresser with box
I've started sorting the squares with colors on them, and the squid is always a handy starting point – if it's big on the puzzle. In this case, yes. I've come this far after 1 hour of puzzling:
Jan van Haasteren at the hairdresser after 1 o'clock
Then all the pieces of the people who sit at the hairdresser on the hairdressers chairs. Baron van Tast tot Zeveren, among others, will be cut. And special things happen with the hairdresser mirrors. The nice thing is that everyone is cut and even the police are chasing the crook with scissors (see below):
Jan van Haasteren at the hairdresser after 25 o'clock
To the last the white pieces of the floor at the hairdresser that is still left:
Jan van Haasteren at the hairdresser 95pct off
And finally this very nice Jan van Haasteren puzzle:

Overview of the Fixed recurring elements

I made a video of all fixed recurring elements in this puzzle:

How big is the puzzle Jan van Haasteren 'At the Hairdresser' 1000 pieces?

This puzzle also has dimensions of 68 (width) by 49 (height). I made the puzzle on a puzzle mat of 1 meter 60 wide and 90 centimeters high.

How long will it take you to complete this 1000 piece puzzle?

I made the puzzle 'At the Hairdresser' in peace and took several days to complete it. Beautiful on a puzzle mat made on the floor in the living room. I do take the time, but not very precisely, it remains a hobby that puzzles! But to give you an idea of how long it took me to complete this 1000 piece JvH puzzle:

  • Explaining the pieces: 20 minutes
  • Laying the edges = 15 minutes
  • Laying the rest of the pieces = 4 hours and 30 minutes
  • So it took me a total of 5 hours and 5 minutes to complete this puzzle. That is faster than it takes me on average over a JvH jigsaw puzzle, namely about 8 hours

About Jumbo puzzles

Jumbo_Logo
Jumbo (not to be confused with our supermarket Jumbo!) makes toys, games and puzzles. Jumbo, for example, has made the very well-known games such as “Human don't get annoyed” and “Stratego” and “PimPamPet”. Games that have been around for generations and are still widely played by both young and old. Jumbo has been making and developing toys since about 1900. In the early years of the company, only toys from other countries were imported to the Netherlands. However, since about 1930 it was decided to also make their own toys, at the time manufacturing wooden toys, which was very popular at the time. Almost all toys in those years were made of wood. An important spearhead was that the toys made by Jumbo had to be of very good quality; it had to be as strong as an Elephant. An elephant had to stand on it! The red elephant has been the hallmark of Jumbo's games and puzzles for years. The name Jumbo and the red elephant together form the logo from about 1935. The Jumbo elephant is drawn by Mr. Möhr. He worked at an advertising agency and regularly signed for Hausemann & Hötte. Mr Möhr was at one point commissioned to design a beautiful new elephant logo for the Hausemann & Hötte toys. The logo has changed a bit since then. For example, the eye has grown over the years and has dropped slightly more, resulting in a friendlier elephant.

In the past, the elephant was not only used in the color red, but in all kinds of colors such as blue, yellow, black, white and green. All those colors were cozy and playful. For example, one time there was a yellow elephant on the box and the other time a red one. It was usually looked at which color best matched the color of the box. It was not until the end of the 60s that the red elephant was definitively chosen. Red is a color that stands out and attracts attention.

From 1945 Jumbo also started to focus on games made of cardboard. Jumbo has therefore been a guarantee for strong quality for years! Jumbo is a unique Dutch company with a rich history, with its head office in Zaandam. About 130 employees work for Jumbo. With a turnover of €75 million, Jumbo is a medium-sized European player in toys. Jumbo has sales offices in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and the United Kingdom. They export to more than 25 countries around the world.

In 1980 Jumbo starts the production of Jan van Haasteren Puzzles.

Topper - 1st puzzle Mars!

I wrote the above review. This is the first puzzle that Mars Greken made for the Jan van Haasteren Studio. And what an entrance! Very fun to make, and lots of recurring elements. I thought it was a very nice puzzle.

Kim Kamrowski - Puzzle was fun to do! Not sure what all the red numbered stickers are about on the one video, as I speak only English. Would have been nice to have it translated.
