Also published as a Formido edition
This puzzle was also released in a special Formido edition (box number 81248, 2013 issue)Formido was a Dutch DIY store chain that commissioned Jumbo to produce a number of Jan van Haasteren puzzles exclusively for their stores. At the time, you could only buy this version at Formido – not in a regular toy store or online shop. Do you recognize a Formido edition? That is harder than you think. The box looks the same as the regular version – the only difference is the box number, which starts with an 8. Want to know more about these special Formido store editions? | Description | This is a rare puzzle and that is because this is a publication by the American puzzle manufacturer Ceaco. Within Ceaco you have various puzzle series and this is the edition that falls within the 'Cartoon Capers' series. Within the puzzles of 550 pieces, the Cartoon Capers Ceaco series has a separate numbering and runs from 2371-01 to 2371-15. So there are 15 puzzles of 550 pieces within this Cartoon Capers series. For the 'die-hard' puzzle collectors, the challenge is to obtain this entire series. This drawing is of course not unique, because 'The Fire Station (or De Brandweer)' has also appeared in other puzzles with different numbers of pieces. But Ceaco makes this puzzle unique and rarer and therefore more expensive. |

| Description | Definitely a rare puzzle. Only 2 Jan van Haasteren puzzles have been released by Jigsaw World, namely: Het Postkantoor (The Postoffice) and De Brandweerkazerne (The FireStation) - both in 1000 pieces. Definitely a collector's item. And the nice thing is, these two puzzles are also published by WH Smith, another English puzzle manufacturer. difficult to obtain in the Netherlands. I ordered them myself from England, via Ebay.co.uk. But then you have to wait a few weeks and there are import duties that you pay. Import duties are quickly 15-20 euros. |

Other pieces of the puzzle with WHSmith's release
I wanted to show this, because they are clearly different puzzle pieces to this puzzle published by WHSmith. I started sorting the edge pieces, but that is very disappointing because there are several pieces that look like edge pieces but are not. You can see that here in the photo below:

Jan van Haasteren and 'Colt'
In this puzzle you see 'Colt'.
What does 'Colt' actually mean and why do you see it on this puzzle?
The story behind this is that this puzzle was made by Jumbo from an advertising poster that Jan van Haasteren had already made in 1982 for the company 'Colt' (see this date signed at the bottom right by Jan van Haasteren). jan van Haasteren had drawn a total of 4 advertising posters for 'Colt'. And some puzzles were made years later. Colt determined the content of the advertising posters.
All puzzles in which you see 'Colt' are:
What kind of company is 'Colt'
Colt is a Climate Control company. For example, they supply air conditioners, fire safety systems, sun blinds and more. The company has been around since 1931. Their website is www.coltinfo.nl. the company is located in Katwijk, North Brabant. They operate all over the world and have offices all over the world. This is their logo, which you will see more often in Jan van Haasteren's puzzles:

Does a 1000 Piece puzzle consist of 1000 Pieces?
No, not always! This puzzle has appeared in a variant, where the puzzle box states that there are 1000 pieces in it. But in reality the puzzle itself does not consist of 1000 Pieces. Do you want to know exactly which Jan van Haasteren puzzles these are? Then view the overview 'Jan van Haasteren puzzles with a different number of puzzle pieces in the box'.

Laying this puzzle
Unfortunately I didn't take many photos of the assembly of this puzzle. It is now the dark days in November/December and I am more puzzled by that a puzzle lampHowever, taking photos always goes less well with a puzzle lamp. Hence the limited series. I always start by sorting the straight edges (difficult with those puzzle pieces with different shapes!):

I must say that the puzzle pieces also do not stick together as well, which is really something different from the very good quality of the Jumbo puzzles of today. As you can see, I'm almost done here. It was very difficult to place all those firefighters, especially all those fire suits look alike. AND – there is a lot going on in this puzzle with lots of nice details, which makes puzzling a little more difficult, but certainly also more fun:

Review video of The Firestation - WH Smith Edition
I made another video with all kinds of fun items on the puzzle and with an overview of all the fixed recurring elements in this puzzle:
How long will it take you to complete this 1000 piece puzzle?
I completed the puzzle 'The Firestation' in peace and quiet and it took me several days to complete it. Beautifully made on a puzzle mat on the floor in the living room. I do record the time, but not very precisely, puzzling remains a hobby! But to give an idea of how long it took me to complete this JvH puzzle of 1000 pieces:
- Explaining the pieces: 20 minutes
- Laying the edges = 25 minutes
- Laying the rest of the pieces = 5 hours and 40 minutes
- Which made me do this puzzle in total = 6 hours and 25 minutes. It used to take me almost always 8 hours, but I have a special tip to be able to puzzle a lot faster
About Jumbo puzzles

Jumbo (not to be confused with our supermarket Jumbo!) makes toys, games and puzzles. Jumbo, for example, has made the very well-known games such as “Human don't get annoyed” and “Stratego” and “PimPamPet”. Games that have been around for generations and are still widely played by both young and old. Jumbo has been making and developing toys since about 1900. In the early years of the company, only toys from other countries were imported to the Netherlands. However, since about 1930 it was decided to also make their own toys, at the time manufacturing wooden toys, which was very popular at the time. Almost all toys in those years were made of wood. An important spearhead was that the toys made by Jumbo had to be of very good quality; it had to be as strong as an Elephant. An elephant had to stand on it! The red elephant has been the hallmark of Jumbo's games and puzzles for years. The name Jumbo and the red elephant together form the logo from about 1935. The Jumbo elephant is drawn by Mr. Möhr. He worked at an advertising agency and regularly signed for Hausemann & Hötte. Mr Möhr was at one point commissioned to design a beautiful new elephant logo for the Hausemann & Hötte toys. The logo has changed a bit since then. For example, the eye has grown over the years and has dropped slightly more, resulting in a friendlier elephant.
In the past, the elephant was not only used in the color red, but in all kinds of colors such as blue, yellow, black, white and green. All those colors were cozy and playful. For example, one time there was a yellow elephant on the box and the other time a red one. It was usually looked at which color best matched the color of the box. It was not until the end of the 60s that the red elephant was definitively chosen. Red is a color that stands out and attracts attention.
From 1945 Jumbo also started to focus on games made of cardboard. Jumbo has therefore been a guarantee for strong quality for years! Jumbo is a unique Dutch company with a rich history, with its head office in Zaandam. About 130 employees work for Jumbo. With a turnover of €75 million, Jumbo is a medium-sized European player in toys. Jumbo has sales offices in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and the United Kingdom. They export to more than 25 countries around the world.
In 1980 Jumbo starts the production of Jan van Haasteren Puzzles.
Reviews about this puzzle
Post a review | |
I wrote the above review in December 2023. I made the old WH Smith puzzle, which is a rare puzzle with older puzzle pieces. Really fun to make and a puzzle with a lot to see. A COLT puzzle poster. Top, recommended, especially the older variants of this puzzle.
A very nice puzzle to make. It is an older puzzle with somewhat similar colors and glossy top coat.
Not all features that are present today are present here.
