More about this puzzle

I made the puzzle 'Celebrate Pride' or 'De Amsterdamse Parade' - this is number 1110100030. It will be published on July 8, 2023. Artist is Mars Gremmen. That's this puzzle:
rsz_jan_van_rusheren_'celebrate_pride'_de_parade_1000_pieces
and this is the box:
rsz_jan_van_rusheren_'celebrate_pride'_de_parade_1000_stukjes_doos

Explanation of this puzzle

In a video my explanation of this puzzle:

The theme is 'Celebrate Pride' - what's this?

I assume that the puzzle represents the event 'Pride Canal Parade in Amsterdam'. However, that cannot be said with certainty. The Pride Canal Parade in Amsterdam is an annual event that takes place during the Amsterdam Pride. It is a colorful and festive boat parade that sails through the canals of Amsterdam.

The Pride Canal Parade is an important part of Pride Week, an event that celebrates the LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer) community and promotes diversity and acceptance. During the parade, dozens of decorated boats sail through the canals, each with its own theme and message. The boats are beautifully decorated and full of people partying in all kinds of different outfits and costumes.

The parade attracts hundreds of thousands of spectators each year, both locals and tourists, who line the canals to admire the spectacle and support the message of inclusiveness. It is a joyful and colorful celebration in which the LGBTQ+ community can proudly show who they are and what they stand for.

In addition to the boat parade, there are also numerous other events, parties and cultural activities throughout the city during Amsterdam Pride. It is a week of love, acceptance and revelry, celebrating the city's diversity and continuing the fight for equal rights and acceptance.

Laying this puzzle

I always do all the puzzles in one puzzle mat, and as you can see, I'm sorting the straight edges out.
rsz_jan_van_rusheren_'celebrate_pride'_de_parade_1000_stukjes_stukjes_op_mat_met_doos
I didn't miss 1 edge piece, and always start by laying the edges:
rsz_jan_van_rusheren_'celebrate_pride'_de_parade_1000_stukjes_randen_en_doos

Very unfortunate, but I now see that I only took 1 intermediate photo when I just started (something went wrong with sending the photos). I started by matching the red colors. A few boats joining the Parade and the food stall at the very top left were simple:
rsz_jan_van_rusheren_'celebrate_pride'_de_parade_1000_pieces__20pct_off

and I finished the puzzle:

Even more famous people / elements

Mars Grem has drawn even more famous people in his puzzle – I hadn't even recognized them all myself. That's what makes Jan van Haasteren's puzzles so much fun, they remain puzzles! You can recognize the following people/elements.

1 Loretta Writer
Loretta Schrijver once wanted to present the Eurovision Song Contest, she advocated more diversity in the presentation of the Eurovision Song Contest – also a fatter older woman.
Correction August 2023 – see the review of a contributor at the very bottom of the page. This is not Loretta Schrijver but Willeke Alberti. I think this makes more sense.

The Village People

the_village_people
The Village People were an American disco group popular in the late 70s and early 80s. They were known for their flamboyant costumes and danceable music. The group consisted of six members, each with a specific character they represented (NB – Mars only drew 5, when there were 6 of them):
– The Construction Worker: Wearing a construction helmet and a stark white T-shirt, he was one of the most recognizable members of the group.
- The Cowboy: He wore a cowboy hat, a red bandana and a leather outfit, complete with boots and a muscular chest.
– The Indian: He wore traditional Native American clothing, including a feathered headdress, a loincloth and moccasins.
– The Policeman: He wore a police uniform with a cap and a police badge.
– De Zeeman: He wore a sailor's uniform with a white cap and striped sleeves.
– The Leather Man: He wore a full leather outfit, including a cap, a leather vest and tight leather pants.

The Village People have a strong connection to the gay scene. Although they were a mainstream disco group that enjoyed worldwide fame, they mainly had a large following within the LGBT+ community. Their distinctive costumes and characters, such as the construction worker, the cowboy, and the leather man, were often associated with gay icons and stereotypes. The Village People's music, with lyrics that were often ambiguous and could refer to homosexual experiences and desires, was embraced by gay men and became a symbol of acceptance and self-expression. Songs like “YMCA” and “In the Navy” became anthems for the gay community and were often played in gay clubs and bars. In addition, The Village People regularly performed at events and pride parades, where they enjoyed great popularity. They symbolized diversity and the freedom to express yourself, and were a source of empowerment for many people within the LGBT+ community.
The Village People were best known for their hits such as “YMCA”, “Macho Man” and “In the Navy”. Their music was energetic and danceable, and they were known for their performances portraying their iconic characters. How long will it take you to complete this 1000 piece puzzle?

I did the puzzle 'Celebrate Pride' in peace and quiet and it took me several days. It's beautiful in a puzzle mat made on the floor in the living room. I do take the time, but not very precisely, it remains a hobby that puzzles! But to give you an idea of how long it took me to complete this 1000 piece JvH puzzle:

About Jumbo puzzles

Jumbo_Logo
Jumbo (not to be confused with our supermarket Jumbo!) makes toys, games and puzzles. Jumbo, for example, has made the very well-known games such as “Human don't get annoyed” and “Stratego” and “PimPamPet”. Games that have been around for generations and are still widely played by both young and old. Jumbo has been making and developing toys since about 1900. In the early years of the company, only toys from other countries were imported to the Netherlands. However, since about 1930 it was decided to also make their own toys, at the time manufacturing wooden toys, which was very popular at the time. Almost all toys in those years were made of wood. An important spearhead was that the toys made by Jumbo had to be of very good quality; it had to be as strong as an Elephant. An elephant had to stand on it! The red elephant has been the hallmark of Jumbo's games and puzzles for years. The name Jumbo and the red elephant together form the logo from about 1935. The Jumbo elephant is drawn by Mr. Möhr. He worked at an advertising agency and regularly signed for Hausemann & Hötte. Mr Möhr was at one point commissioned to design a beautiful new elephant logo for the Hausemann & Hötte toys. The logo has changed a bit since then. For example, the eye has grown over the years and has dropped slightly more, resulting in a friendlier elephant.

In the past, the elephant was not only used in the color red, but in all kinds of colors such as blue, yellow, black, white and green. All those colors were cozy and playful. For example, one time there was a yellow elephant on the box and the other time a red one. It was usually looked at which color best matched the color of the box. It was not until the end of the 60s that the red elephant was definitively chosen. Red is a color that stands out and attracts attention.

From 1945 Jumbo also started to focus on games made of cardboard. Jumbo has therefore been a guarantee for strong quality for years! Jumbo is a unique Dutch company with a rich history, with its head office in Zaandam. About 130 employees work for Jumbo. With a turnover of €75 million, Jumbo is a medium-sized European player in toys. Jumbo has sales offices in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and the United Kingdom. They export to more than 25 countries around the world.

In 1980 Jumbo starts the production of Jan van Haasteren Puzzles.

Iris - I just finished this pride puzzle, it's amazing! Is the woman putting on makeup just to the right of Raven, perhaps Nikki the Hunter? The details are so cute, like Tarzan in the upper right, looking stunned as Jane kisses a woman, and the underwater hitchhiker holding up a sign for Lesbos—it's a sight to behold.

Mars - Hi Gerben, thanks for the positive review. A few corrections: Mister Humpbries, the funny salesman with the high-pitched voice from the series "Are You Being Served?", was played by John Inman. He does indeed look a bit like the man in the boat. The woman in the inflatable boat is reminiscent of Leontine Ruiters. The soccer player looks a bit like Vivianne Miedema. Other characters do indeed resemble the people you mentioned. But that's pure coincidence. Really! Really! Unconscious influence...!

Joko - Great story! I just have one comment: the woman in the jury boat isn't Loretta Schrijver. It's Willeke Alberti, a jury member for the 2022 Canal Parade. Cornald Maas and Jeangu Macrooy are also in the same boat.

Lonneke - The Indian from The Village People has fallen through the hole in the balcony. See the clouds of dust, the whirling feather, the terrified face of the police officer (Village People) and the calling passerby.
