The Netherlands and the Cheese Markets

History and Origin:
The cheese trade has a long history in the Netherlands. In the Middle Ages, cities began to obtain the right to organize markets. Some of these markets specialized in cheese due to growing demand, both locally and internationally.

The First Cheese Market:
It is difficult to determine exactly which city had the very first cheese market, but Alkmaar is known as one of the oldest and most traditional cheese markets in the Netherlands. The Alkmaar cheese market started in 1593.

Current Cheese Markets:
There are still cheese markets in the Netherlands today, although these are often more touristy in nature than actual trade takes place. Here are some of the most famous:

  • Alkmaar:
As mentioned earlier, this is one of the most traditional and famous cheese markets. The cheese market in Alkmaar is known as the largest and most famous cheese market in the Netherlands. It is held on the Waagplein from the first Friday in April to the first Friday in September.
An impression of the cheese market in Alkmaar:
  • Edam:
Edam is known for its round red cheeses. The cheese market in Edam is held on Wednesdays in July and August.
An impression of the cheese market in Edam:
  • Gouda cheese:
This city is famous for its Gouda cheese. The cheese market in Gouda takes place from April to August on Thursday mornings.
An impression of the cheese market in Gouda:
  • Horn:
The cheese market in Hoorn is more of a historical reenactment than a real market. It takes place on Thursdays from June to August.
An impression of the cheese market in Hoorn:
  • Woerden:
Unlike most other cheese markets, the market in Woerden is still a real trading place, albeit on a smaller scale than before. This takes place on Saturdays from April to August.
An impression of the cheese market in Woerden:

Most cheese markets in the Netherlands are therefore seasonal and are held in the summer months. They attract many tourists because of the traditional way in which cheese is weighed, carried, and sold, often in historical clothing and with traditional rituals.

Explanation of the puzzle in the 2-in-1 combination box

This puzzle is in 1 or more search books

This puzzle is in 1 or more search books by Jan van Haasteren. These are not only fun search books to search for recurring elements, you can also ideally use the image of this puzzle as an 'extra' large poster while puzzling! View the overview with our 'Jan van Haasteren search books'

Laying the puzzle

I always start by sorting the straight edged pieces and always complete the puzzle on a puzzle mat. Here you can see the edges laid and the box on top and the small poster included:

I started with the houses, so the top of the puzzle. The people are always the most difficult and laying the stones of the houses was not so bad. The stalls at the cheese market were also quickly set up:

The most difficult part were the cheeses and the many cheese pushers at the cheese market:

And in the end I finished the puzzle, highly recommended!

Review of this puzzle

I made a review video of this puzzle:

Recurring element by Dick Heins - C Loves M

A very striking small element is that on the cart (with all the cheeses in it) at the cheese market it says 'C loves M'. I had no idea what this means. I asked about this in various forums and finally Dick Heins answered this, he said that this was a promise he made to people. You can see that here:

'C loves M' means: Corinne and Maurice. Maurice is Dick Heins' good friend, and I think Corinne is his wife or girlfriend. This is Maurice:

Maurice is almost always seen in Dick Heins' puzzles, he is in a wheelchair and is with his dog.
The 'C loves D' is also in the puzzle 'roller disco'.

How long will it take you to complete this 1000 piece puzzle?

I completed the puzzle 'The Cheese Market' in peace and quiet and it took me several days to complete it. Beautifully made on a puzzle mat on the floor in the living room. I do record the time, but not very precisely, puzzling remains a hobby! But to give an idea of how long it took me to complete this JvH puzzle of 1000 pieces:

About Jumbo puzzles

Jumbo_Logo
Jumbo (not to be confused with our supermarket Jumbo!) makes toys, games and puzzles. Jumbo, for example, has made the very well-known games such as “Human don't get annoyed” and “Stratego” and “PimPamPet”. Games that have been around for generations and are still widely played by both young and old. Jumbo has been making and developing toys since about 1900. In the early years of the company, only toys from other countries were imported to the Netherlands. However, since about 1930 it was decided to also make their own toys, at the time manufacturing wooden toys, which was very popular at the time. Almost all toys in those years were made of wood. An important spearhead was that the toys made by Jumbo had to be of very good quality; it had to be as strong as an Elephant. An elephant had to stand on it! The red elephant has been the hallmark of Jumbo's games and puzzles for years. The name Jumbo and the red elephant together form the logo from about 1935. The Jumbo elephant is drawn by Mr. Möhr. He worked at an advertising agency and regularly signed for Hausemann & Hötte. Mr Möhr was at one point commissioned to design a beautiful new elephant logo for the Hausemann & Hötte toys. The logo has changed a bit since then. For example, the eye has grown over the years and has dropped slightly more, resulting in a friendlier elephant.

In the past, the elephant was not only used in the color red, but in all kinds of colors such as blue, yellow, black, white and green. All those colors were cozy and playful. For example, one time there was a yellow elephant on the box and the other time a red one. It was usually looked at which color best matched the color of the box. It was not until the end of the 60s that the red elephant was definitively chosen. Red is a color that stands out and attracts attention.

From 1945 Jumbo also started to focus on games made of cardboard. Jumbo has therefore been a guarantee for strong quality for years! Jumbo is a unique Dutch company with a rich history, with its head office in Zaandam. About 130 employees work for Jumbo. With a turnover of €75 million, Jumbo is a medium-sized European player in toys. Jumbo has sales offices in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and the United Kingdom. They export to more than 25 countries around the world.

In 1980 Jumbo starts the production of Jan van Haasteren Puzzles.
