DescriptionYou don't see these very often. More of a collector's item. This puzzle has also appeared in a normal Jumbo box in 1000 pieces. However, this is a flat box and you will receive it as a prize if you participated in the Friends lottery. The advantage of this flat box is that they sometimes fit through the letterbox and therefore had to be sent as a package. Practice shows that this was not always possible for everyone. I have created two extensive pages for this: Bankgiro Lottery puzzles en Friends lottery puzzles. All puzzles that appeared in flat boxes are:
  • Middle Ages (1000 Pieces)
  • German Beer Festival (1000 Pieces)
  • The Opera (1000 Pieces)
  • The Mars (1000 Pieces)
  • On Land, On Sea and in the Air (1000 Pieces) (2x, only the name on these two boxes differs slightly)
  • De Oranje Post NL puzzle 500 Pieces. Especially for Post NL employees (2018 and artist is Rob Derks)

UPDATE - dated February 4, 2024: a second flat box has been found for the Mars puzzle, and it does have the same number (81768), but this box differs from the 'normal' box in 3 ways (see image - 2 above ):
  • The puzzle names are not underlined
  • Black Pete has been replaced by a Christmas elf or gnome
  • The signature at the bottom right of the puzzle is missing, in the normal version it says 'JOH', which is now completely missing

Laying the puzzle

I always start by laying out all the puzzle pieces on a puzzle mat. Usually I'm not done in 1 day and with a puzzle mat it's easy to store your puzzle. I always immediately sort out the straight edge pieces:
Jan van Haasteren 'De Mars' 1000 pieces pieces laid out on mat
And here I laid the edges and as you can see, I didn't miss a single straight edge piece:
Jan van Haasteren 'De Mars' 1000 pieces of straight edges laid
It is very special, but I finished this puzzle very quickly, because I used a different tactic to puzzle, namely first look very carefully at the image on the box. And then start puzzling. So I only have 1 picture of my intermediate score of the puzzle, because I finished the puzzle in 3 hours and 25 minutes…..As you can see I sort the pieces with the same colors together and the blue umbrellas were easy, as well as the airplane. I laid the last of all the runners participating in this march, but unfortunately no photo of them:

and this is the final result, I finished the puzzle:

How long will it take you to complete this 1000 piece puzzle?

I made the puzzle 'The Mars' in peace and it also took several days. Beautiful on a puzzle mat made on the floor in the living room. I do take the time, but not very precisely, it remains a hobby that puzzling! However – this is the first puzzle where I have applied a new custom puzzle tip, which makes the puzzle 50% faster! Want to know what the golden tip is? read 'tips for quick puzzles'.
But to give you an idea how long it took me to complete this JvH puzzle of 1000 pieces:

  • Explaining the pieces: 20 minutes
  • Laying the edges = 25 minutes
  • Laying the rest of the pieces = 2 hours and 40 minutes
  • Which made me do this puzzle in total = 3 hours and 25 minutes. That is much faster than it took me on average to do a JvH jigsaw puzzle, namely about 7-8 hours

About Jumbo puzzles

Jumbo_Logo
Jumbo (not to be confused with our supermarket Jumbo!) makes toys, games and puzzles. Jumbo, for example, has made the very well-known games such as “Human don't get annoyed” and “Stratego” and “PimPamPet”. Games that have been around for generations and are still widely played by both young and old. Jumbo has been making and developing toys since about 1900. In the early years of the company, only toys from other countries were imported to the Netherlands. However, since about 1930 it was decided to also make their own toys, at the time manufacturing wooden toys, which was very popular at the time. Almost all toys in those years were made of wood. An important spearhead was that the toys made by Jumbo had to be of very good quality; it had to be as strong as an Elephant. An elephant had to stand on it! The red elephant has been the hallmark of Jumbo's games and puzzles for years. The name Jumbo and the red elephant together form the logo from about 1935. The Jumbo elephant is drawn by Mr. Möhr. He worked at an advertising agency and regularly signed for Hausemann & Hötte. Mr Möhr was at one point commissioned to design a beautiful new elephant logo for the Hausemann & Hötte toys. The logo has changed a bit since then. For example, the eye has grown over the years and has dropped slightly more, resulting in a friendlier elephant.

In the past, the elephant was not only used in the color red, but in all kinds of colors such as blue, yellow, black, white and green. All those colors were cozy and playful. For example, one time there was a yellow elephant on the box and the other time a red one. It was usually looked at which color best matched the color of the box. It was not until the end of the 60s that the red elephant was definitively chosen. Red is a color that stands out and attracts attention.

From 1945 Jumbo also started to focus on games made of cardboard. Jumbo has therefore been a guarantee for strong quality for years! Jumbo is a unique Dutch company with a rich history, with its head office in Zaandam. About 130 employees work for Jumbo. With a turnover of €75 million, Jumbo is a medium-sized European player in toys. Jumbo has sales offices in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and the United Kingdom. They export to more than 25 countries around the world.

In 1980 Jumbo starts the production of Jan van Haasteren Puzzles.
