Jan van Haasteren puzzle 'Dia de los Muertos'
I completed the puzzle "Dia de los Muertos" – this is number 220077, released on March 25, 2023. This is the second 1000 piece puzzle in 2023! This puzzle is drawn by Dick Heins Studio Jan van Haasteren. It's this puzzle:

What does "Dia de los Muertos" mean?
Dia de los Muertos, also known as Day of the Dead, is a Mexican holiday celebrated on November 1 and 2. The holiday is a time for families and communities to honor and remember their departed loved ones.
The celebration of Dia de los Muertos has roots in the ancient indigenous cultures of Mexico, including the Aztecs, who believed that death was a natural part of the cycle of life and that the spirits of the departed could return to the world for a short time of the living to be with their loved ones.
During Dia de los Muertos, families create ofrendas, or altars, in their homes and cemeteries to honor their departed loved ones. The altars are decorated with flowers, candles, pictures, and offerings of the deceased's favorite foods and drinks. Families also often visit the graves of their loved ones and decorate them with flowers and candles.
How did the holiday 'Dia de los Muertos' come about?
Dia de los Muertos has been celebrated in Mexico for thousands of years and has its origins in the traditions of the indigenous peoples, especially the Aztecs. The festival was celebrated in the ninth month of the Aztec calendar, which roughly corresponds to August in the Gregorian calendar.
After the Spanish conquest of Mexico in the 16th century, the native traditions were mixed with Catholic traditions, leading to the present day celebration of Dia de los Muertos on November 1 and 2, the Catholic Church's All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day. The festival has been an important part of Mexican culture ever since, and is lavishly celebrated each year by people all over Mexico and parts of the United States and Latin America.

Video about this puzzle (Explanation / Unpack)
Watch the box and an explanation video about this puzzle:
Laying the puzzle
It is a very nice puzzle, partly because it contains many colors and it is a party. Something is being celebrated! I always put the puzzle on one puzzle mat of 3000 pieces, because then all the pieces fit on the puzzle mat. I then immediately sort the straight pieces and hope I've been able to find them all (it must be 126). I've explained the bits here:

I will then lay the edges - and yes, I sorted all the straight pieces in 1 go. That is sometimes different:

There is a lot of color in this puzzle, but I still started sorting the big colored areas and those are the houses you see in Mexico (it's a Mexican festival 'The Day of the Dead'). I also sorted the many blue of the policemen:

Here you can see that I have completed the puzzle for 80%. The most difficult part was the people with all the masks and 'other' faces walking through the streets in a procession. You can hardly see which mask belongs to whom. Nice that Dick Heins also drew a picture of the graves that the Mexicans also decorate and all kinds of food and drinks at places:

and I finished the puzzle – it was a lot of fun to make:

Review of this puzzle
I made a review video of this puzzle with an overview of the recurring elements. However – this time it was very difficult to trace the Jan van Haasteren family and/or the fixed recurring elements. Virtually unrecognizable. For example, I miss Baron van Tast. What a quest that was! As you can see below the video, I made the puzzle very soon after release and therefore missed a few items in the video. But I put it under the video with photos:
NOTE – 1: I think I forgot Santa Claus AND Sinterklaas in the video, I think they are these two men with beards:

NOTE – 2: I missed the 'Puzzle Cats'. You can see it here:

Who are the puzzle cats? That's the team that became Dutch Champion in 2022! They put together a puzzle of 1000 pieces in about 1 hour. Here's a video of them:
NOTE – 3: I did name the police in the video above, but where is the crook?? There are several variants for this. Those are the options – of which almost everyone thinks the last option is the REAL crook:
-> Option 1:

-> Option 2:

-> Option 3 (REAL Crook):

How long will it take you to complete this 1000 piece puzzle?
I made the puzzle 'Day of the Dead' in peace and it also took several days. Beautiful on a puzzle mat made on the floor in the living room. I do take the time, but not very precisely, it remains a hobby that puzzling! But to give you an idea how long it took me to complete this JvH puzzle of 1000 pieces:
- Explaining the pieces: 20 minutes
- Laying the edges = 15 minutes
- Laying the rest of the pieces = 4 hours and 30 minutes
- So it took me a total of 5 hours and 5 minutes to complete this puzzle. That is faster than it takes me on average over a JvH jigsaw puzzle, namely about 8 hours
About Jumbo puzzles

Jumbo (not to be confused with our supermarket Jumbo!) makes toys, games and puzzles. Jumbo, for example, has made the very well-known games such as “Human don't get annoyed” and “Stratego” and “PimPamPet”. Games that have been around for generations and are still widely played by both young and old. Jumbo has been making and developing toys since about 1900. In the early years of the company, only toys from other countries were imported to the Netherlands. However, since about 1930 it was decided to also make their own toys, at the time manufacturing wooden toys, which was very popular at the time. Almost all toys in those years were made of wood. An important spearhead was that the toys made by Jumbo had to be of very good quality; it had to be as strong as an Elephant. An elephant had to stand on it! The red elephant has been the hallmark of Jumbo's games and puzzles for years. The name Jumbo and the red elephant together form the logo from about 1935. The Jumbo elephant is drawn by Mr. Möhr. He worked at an advertising agency and regularly signed for Hausemann & Hötte. Mr Möhr was at one point commissioned to design a beautiful new elephant logo for the Hausemann & Hötte toys. The logo has changed a bit since then. For example, the eye has grown over the years and has dropped slightly more, resulting in a friendlier elephant.
In the past, the elephant was not only used in the color red, but in all kinds of colors such as blue, yellow, black, white and green. All those colors were cozy and playful. For example, one time there was a yellow elephant on the box and the other time a red one. It was usually looked at which color best matched the color of the box. It was not until the end of the 60s that the red elephant was definitively chosen. Red is a color that stands out and attracts attention.
From 1945 Jumbo also started to focus on games made of cardboard. Jumbo has therefore been a guarantee for strong quality for years! Jumbo is a unique Dutch company with a rich history, with its head office in Zaandam. About 130 employees work for Jumbo. With a turnover of €75 million, Jumbo is a medium-sized European player in toys. Jumbo has sales offices in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and the United Kingdom. They export to more than 25 countries around the world.
In 1980 Jumbo starts the production of Jan van Haasteren Puzzles.

I wrote the above review in March 2023, and this was a super fun puzzle. Still difficult, given all the details. But what a joy it was to make. Very original topic a celebration in Mexico - the day of the dead!
