What is De Fata Morgana in Efteling again?
The information below is from Eftepedia.nl.
Fata Morgana is a dark ride in Anderrijk. The attraction takes a boat, a transportation system known as the Tow Boat Ride, through a canal past scenes based on the Fairy Tales of 1001 Nights. Various cliché images from the mystical, Arabian fairytale world are depicted here - from beggars and merchants to flying carpets and a real Djinn.
Where is 'The Forbidden City in Efteling' located?
The entrance to the Forbidden City, the alternative name for the attraction, can be found at the Fata Morganaplein, located on the Vonderplas, in the south-west of the park. The outer walls of the rectangular building in which the attraction is located are constructed like an oriental palace, complete with domes, towers, battlements and a minaret.
Since when is the Fata Morgana in De Efteling
The attraction was opened in 1986 on the 35th anniversary of Efteling, after more than five years of work. It was the last project of an ambitious multi-year plan that was launched in 1978 with the Spookslot and was intended to put Efteling on the international map as a high-quality theme park with attractions such as the Python and the Piraña. The basis for the project formed the life-size audio-animatronics, on which technicians Mari van Heumen and Henk Smulders had been working since the early eighties. The creative designs were mainly done by Ton van de Ven, but also by Henny Knoet and Peter van Ostade. Jan Verhoeven was responsible for the layout and architectural translation.
What does a 'Fata Morgana' mean?
The name Fata Morgana, another word for mirage, comes from Italian (La fata Morgana). It is an optical phenomenon in which, due to large temperature differences between the different air layers, things can be seen that are actually located somewhere else. A well-known example of this is the imagined oases that thirsty desert travelers sometimes see on the horizon.
Fairy Tales of 100 Nights
As mentioned, the Fata Morgana is based on the Fairy Tales of 1001 Nights. “1001 Nights”, also known as “One Thousand and One Nights”, is a collection of Eastern stories, fairy tales and tales originally from different countries and cultures in the Middle East, such as Persia (present-day Iran ), India and Arabia. The stories are believed to have been collected and written down in the Arab world, although their precise origins and authorship are unclear. The most famous stories from 1001 Nights include:
- Aladdin and the magic lamp:
This story is about a poor boy named Aladdin who discovers a magic lamp and summons a genie that helps him in granting wishes. - Scheherazade:
She is the frame story of the collection. Scheherazade is the vizier's daughter and is forced to tell stories to the king in order to save her life. She tells a new story every night, stopping at a tense moment so that the king keeps her alive to finish the story the next night. - Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves:
Ali Baba discovers a robbers' hideout and the treasure they keep, using the magic phrase "Open Sesame!" - Sinbad the Sailor:
This is a series of adventure stories about Sinbad and his journeys to exotic locations and overcoming various challenges. - The story of King Shahryar and his brother:
This story forms the framework for the rest of the stories. King Shahryar discovers that his wife is unfaithful and starts marrying a new woman every night and has her executed in the morning. Scheherazade comes with her stories to break this pattern. - The Fisherman and the Jinni:
This is one of the stories told by Scheherazade. It's about a fisherman who retrieves a sealed bottle and accidentally frees an evil spirit.
These are just a few of the many stories in 1001 Nights. The collection contains a rich variety of narrations including love stories, adventures, moralistic lessons and more. The stories have been translated, adapted and retold throughout the centuries in different cultures around the world.

More about a Tour through the Fata Morgana in De Efteling
According to Eftepedia.nl: A trip through Fata Morgana, covering a distance of 285 meters, takes just under eight minutes. During the ride through the attraction, 137 audio-animatronics can be seen. Large sets are used through which the boats, which are powered underwater with cables along large round discs, sail through. Visitors pass through 14 sections that use effects such as open fire, lasers, wind, scent, fog and music; and the sounds of the cinematic soundtrack by Ruud Bos.
Explanation in a video on this puzzle
In a video an explanation of this puzzle:
Laying the puzzle
I always put the puzzle on a puzzle mat, but in principle that was not necessary, because my daughter puzzled along and we actually put this puzzle at a high pace. That's something else when my daughter has school holidays. Normally she never puzzles along. We laid out the puzzle on a puzzle mat:

And started with the pieces with the same color. The puzzle is about the fairy tales of 1001 nights. These fairy tales mainly take place in the Middle East and you can see that in the beautiful buildings. These buildings (mosques) were easy to install:

Then laid the water in which you sail with the boat through the Fata Morgana of De Efteling. The most difficult part was explaining the visitors walking around in the Fata Morgana, so we saved this one for last:

and I finished the puzzle:

Review video about this puzzle
I made a review video with the fixed recurring elements of Dick Heins:
How long will it take you to complete this 1000 piece puzzle?
Normally I always keep track of how long it takes me to complete a puzzle. However, this time I made the puzzle together with my 17-year-old daughter and therefore did not keep track of time. Usually it takes me 4 to 5 hours.
About Jumbo puzzles

Jumbo (not to be confused with our supermarket Jumbo!) makes toys, games and puzzles. Jumbo, for example, has made the very well-known games such as “Human don't get annoyed” and “Stratego” and “PimPamPet”. Games that have been around for generations and are still widely played by both young and old. Jumbo has been making and developing toys since about 1900. In the early years of the company, only toys from other countries were imported to the Netherlands. However, since about 1930 it was decided to also make their own toys, at the time manufacturing wooden toys, which was very popular at the time. Almost all toys in those years were made of wood. An important spearhead was that the toys made by Jumbo had to be of very good quality; it had to be as strong as an Elephant. An elephant had to stand on it! The red elephant has been the hallmark of Jumbo's games and puzzles for years. The name Jumbo and the red elephant together form the logo from about 1935. The Jumbo elephant is drawn by Mr. Möhr. He worked at an advertising agency and regularly signed for Hausemann & Hötte. Mr Möhr was at one point commissioned to design a beautiful new elephant logo for the Hausemann & Hötte toys. The logo has changed a bit since then. For example, the eye has grown over the years and has dropped slightly more, resulting in a friendlier elephant.
In the past, the elephant was not only used in the color red, but in all kinds of colors such as blue, yellow, black, white and green. All those colors were cozy and playful. For example, one time there was a yellow elephant on the box and the other time a red one. It was usually looked at which color best matched the color of the box. It was not until the end of the 60s that the red elephant was definitively chosen. Red is a color that stands out and attracts attention.
From 1945 Jumbo also started to focus on games made of cardboard. Jumbo has therefore been a guarantee for strong quality for years! Jumbo is a unique Dutch company with a rich history, with its head office in Zaandam. About 130 employees work for Jumbo. With a turnover of €75 million, Jumbo is a medium-sized European player in toys. Jumbo has sales offices in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and the United Kingdom. They export to more than 25 countries around the world.
In 1980 Jumbo starts the production of Jan van Haasteren Puzzles.
