I wrote the above review in September 2023. An old puzzle, made by Jan van Haasteren. But what a fun one and there is also a whole story behind it with the Hockey World Cup in Utrecht at the time. I also like doing the older puzzles. Thanks Jan!

Jan van Haasteren Puzzle 'Hockey KNHB'
I made the puzzle 'Hockey (KNHB)' or 'Hockey (KNHB)' 1st variant – this puzzle has no number. Year of publication is 1998. The artist is Jan van Haasteren. That's this puzzle:

and this is the box (KNHB 1st variant):

And the sides of the box (this is the same for all four variants):

You can see the number of this puzzle on the inside of the box – it is very small, but you will see '80812' there. In the second image below, you can see '80812 / 3 / 4 / 5':

Explanation of the puzzle in a video
I have made an explanation of this puzzle in a video:
This puzzle from 'Hockey KNHB'
This puzzle has appeared in several variants, with very minor differences. The small differences can be found in the KNHB puzzle Hockey in the box with the orange edge and the white color. Four variants of that puzzle have been released and this is truly a collector's item. So what are the differences? The differences lie in the advertising boards at the 'top' of the field. And then it specifically concerns one billboard, and that is the billboard next to the orange billboard. That is this one – the red bordered one:

This board differs in 4 puzzles. That's why you have the Hockey puzzle in four variants. The 1st variant is the least rare. Variants 2, 3 and 4 are difficult to obtain. Here they are:
– Variant 1 Advertising sign with the text 'My Kick is a Hockey Stick'. Number 80812.
This puzzle was for the members of the KNHB:

– Variant 2 Advertising sign with the text 'Rabobank International'. Number 80813.
This is for the relations of sponsor Rabobank:

– Variant 3 Advertising sign with the text 'Extran'. Number 80814.
This one is for the business relations of sponsor Extran:

– Variant 4 Advertising sign with the text 'Desso DLW Sport Systems'. Number 80815.
This is for sponsor Desso (manufacturer of carpet and artificial grass hockey fields):

This puzzle has appeared in a number of variants

Puzzle 'Hockey Championships' and 'Hockey' and 'Hockey KNHB'
Confuse the puzzle 'Hockey Championships'not with the puzzle'Hockey KNHB' and the puzzle 'hockey'. These are very similar, but there are several differences, especially in the advertising boards that are located along the hockey field. All these variants are explained in more detail on the 'hockey'.
I made a video showing these differences:

I made another video explaining the 4 (unfortunately 3!) rare puzzle variants of KNHB Hockey:

| Description | The 'Hockey KNHB' puzzle was released in 1998 in honor of the 100th anniversary of the Royal Dutch Hockey Federation. Part of the proceeds from this puzzle went towards the construction of a new house in Karachi. How exactly did that come about? You can read about it here: In 1980, Dutch hockey players visited Sister Gertrude Lemmens in Karachi, Pakistan, for the first time. Since 1969, she had been running Dar-Ul-Sukun – the 'house of happiness' – a care home for mentally and physically disabled children there. It was the first care home of its kind in all of Pakistan. From that first visit, a special bond developed between the Dutch hockey world and Sister Truus. Players and officials were deeply impressed by her dedication and the way she cared for and guided the children. On the occasion of the KNHB's 100th anniversary, the Dutch hockey world wanted to do something for Sister Lemmens, who was by then 83 years old. Therefore, part of the proceeds from this puzzle went towards the construction of a new house next to Dar-Ul-Sukun in Karachi, so that there would be more space for the children and young people she cared for. Furthermore, there are four variants of this puzzle, which are the following:- Variant 1: Advertising sign with the text 'My Kick is a Hockey Stick'. Number 80812.Variant 2: Advertising sign with the text 'Rabobank International'. Number 80813. Variant 3: Advertising sign with the text 'Extran'. Number 80814. Variant 4: Advertising sign with the text 'Desso DLW Sport Systems'. Number 80815. Each puzzle has its own number - discovered as of March 15, 2026For a very long time, these puzzles were only referred to as 'variant 1' and 'variant 2', etc. However, as of March 15, 2026, I discovered that there actually is a puzzle number on the inside of the lid of every puzzle. Very small on every puzzle in the box, the numbers '80812, 80813, 80814, and 80815' are printed. That makes sense, because puzzles in the old numbering system started with an '8' if the puzzle was published by a party other than Jumbo, and in this case, that was the KNHB. A wonderful discovery, therefore. And since this date, the puzzles continue with their own unique number. However, you also see a number on the inside of every box, and next to every puzzle it says '80812 / 3 / 4 / 5'. This indicates this series or set of these puzzles that 'belong together'.Which of these puzzles is the rarest? The rarest and hardest to find is the puzzle 'Hockey KNHB 'Desso' (80815)'. After that, the rarest is the puzzle 'Hockey KNHB 'Extran' (80814)', followed by 'Hockey KNHB 'Rabobank' (80813)'. The puzzle 'Hockey KNHB 'Mijn Kick' (80812)' is not rare at all. Do you want to know what is being asked for these puzzles on Marktplaats? Then take a look at Jan van Haasteren rare puzzles. The three names of the companies on the sponsor boardsThe name on puzzle number 80812, 'Mijn Kick', is not a company name; it is a slogan. However, the names on the sponsor boards on the other puzzles are all the names of sponsors of the 1998 Hockey World Cup, namely: Rabobank, Extran, and Desso.Variant 2: Advertising sign with the text 'Rabobank International'. Number 80813This version was for the business relations of sponsor Rabobank. We all know this company.Variant 3: Advertising sign with the text 'Extran'. Number 80814Extran is not a company, but a brand, and is part of the company 'Riedel'. This company focuses on providing energy and hydration during sports and produces, among other things, isotonic and hypertonic drinks. These products are widely sold in sports canteens, supermarkets, and wholesalers, making the brand primarily known among athletes and active consumers. The Extran brand has existed since the late 80s and has built up strong name recognition in the Netherlands. It is important to know that Extran is not a large, independent company, but a brand that is part of the Dutch producer Riedel. This producer is also responsible for well-known brands such as Appelsientje and DubbelFrisss. The distribution of Extran takes place through parties such as Vrumona, among others. Extran as a brand still exists.Variant 3: Advertising sign with the text 'Desso'. Number 80815Desso is a Dutch brand that started as a carpet manufacturer and has grown into an international player in both flooring solutions and sports fields. The company is known for innovative carpets and advanced artificial grass and hybrid fields, which are used worldwide in offices, hotels, and top sports stadiums. Desso as a brand still exists. |

Puzzle with other shapes puzzle pieces
The special thing about these old puzzles is that there are puzzle pieces with different shapes. You can see that clearly in the photo below. That poses a slightly different puzzle:

The back of the puzzle box - the full explanation
The back of the puzzle box contains the full explanation:
In 1980, when the Dutch national hockey team played in Karachi for the first time, it was a great experience for the men's team. Sure, the top international hockey players had already played in various countries, but Pakistan was something else entirely. It was the era of Sukur and Tuulman. The Dutch national hockey team made a special trip to Pakistan. Sukur, a man of the world, and Tuulman, the very picture of calm, brought Dutch hockey to the land of the sacred cow and the enormous population. In Pakistan, where thousands of spectators filled the stadium, it was an experience in itself. Since Bart Tuulman's first visit, a special bond had developed between the Dutch hockey players and Pakistan, and the men played against the Pakistani powerhouse countless times. It was a sporting battle, in which mutual respect and friendship grew, and countless wonderful memories were created. In Karachi, the Dutch team received a warm welcome. Tuulman and Sukur were deeply respected by the Pakistani hockey players. During training sessions and matches, they played with passion, but sportsmanship always came first. At that time, the Dutch team was impressed by the fanaticism and enormous passion that the Pakistani players had for hockey.
The team toured the streets of Karachi with Bart Tuulman and Sukur, sampling local cuisine and enjoying the hospitality of the locals. The Dutch hockey players learned from their opponents, and the Pakistanis, in turn, learned from the Dutch. A healthy rivalry developed that lasted for years. Now, a hundred years later, that special bond is still palpable. The hockey world has changed, but the memories of those encounters endure. In Pakistan, those memorable matches are still talked about. Sukur and Tuulman, names that left their mark on international hockey. Now that the Royal Dutch Hockey Association is celebrating its centenary, people are looking back on all those wonderful moments. From Bart Tuulman, who played his first match against the Pakistanis, to the youngest generation of hockey players who proudly wear the orange jersey. This puzzle, created especially for the 100th anniversary of the KNHB, is a tribute to all the athletes, coaches, volunteers, and supporters who made hockey great in the Netherlands. Let Sister Truus Lemmens know that there are many Dutch hockey players who look back on that time with pleasure.
Royal Dutch Hockey Association 100 Years. Bart Tuulman and Sukur. Commemorative puzzle to commemorate 100 years of the KNHB.

KNHB 100 YEARS
Let Sister Truus Lemmens know that there are many Dutch hockey players!”
Laying the puzzle
I always start by sorting the puzzle pieces and then placing the edges, sometimes I miss 1 or 2 pieces while sorting and you can see that again here; I am missing 2 puzzle pieces near the edge:

I started at the two light poles of the hockey field – they were clear red colors. The two hockey goals were also easy to recognize with the nets:

The puzzle was not very difficult and therefore I only have two photos of the puzzle. After the light poles, I placed people in the stands. That wasn't too bad, placing the pieces of the hockey players on the field was the most difficult, because many pieces look alike:

and finally I finished the puzzle:

Review video of the puzzle 'Hockey KNHB'
I made a review video of this puzzle:
How long will it take you to complete this 1000 piece puzzle?
I completed the 'Hockey (KNHB)' puzzle in peace and quiet and it took me several days to complete it. Beautifully made on a puzzle mat on the floor in the living room. I do record the time, but not very precisely, puzzling remains a hobby! But to give an idea of how long it took me to complete this JvH puzzle of 1000 pieces:
- Explaining the pieces: 20 minutes
- Laying the edges = 25 minutes
- Laying the rest of the pieces = 4 hours and 15 minutes
- Which made me do this puzzle in total = 5 hours. It used to take me almost always 8 hours, but I have a special tip to be able to puzzle a lot faster
About Jumbo puzzles

Jumbo (not to be confused with our supermarket Jumbo!) makes toys, games and puzzles. Jumbo, for example, has made the very well-known games such as “Human don't get annoyed” and “Stratego” and “PimPamPet”. Games that have been around for generations and are still widely played by both young and old. Jumbo has been making and developing toys since about 1900. In the early years of the company, only toys from other countries were imported to the Netherlands. However, since about 1930 it was decided to also make their own toys, at the time manufacturing wooden toys, which was very popular at the time. Almost all toys in those years were made of wood. An important spearhead was that the toys made by Jumbo had to be of very good quality; it had to be as strong as an Elephant. An elephant had to stand on it! The red elephant has been the hallmark of Jumbo's games and puzzles for years. The name Jumbo and the red elephant together form the logo from about 1935. The Jumbo elephant is drawn by Mr. Möhr. He worked at an advertising agency and regularly signed for Hausemann & Hötte. Mr Möhr was at one point commissioned to design a beautiful new elephant logo for the Hausemann & Hötte toys. The logo has changed a bit since then. For example, the eye has grown over the years and has dropped slightly more, resulting in a friendlier elephant.
In the past, the elephant was not only used in the color red, but in all kinds of colors such as blue, yellow, black, white and green. All those colors were cozy and playful. For example, one time there was a yellow elephant on the box and the other time a red one. It was usually looked at which color best matched the color of the box. It was not until the end of the 60s that the red elephant was definitively chosen. Red is a color that stands out and attracts attention.
From 1945 Jumbo also started to focus on games made of cardboard. Jumbo has therefore been a guarantee for strong quality for years! Jumbo is a unique Dutch company with a rich history, with its head office in Zaandam. About 130 employees work for Jumbo. With a turnover of €75 million, Jumbo is a medium-sized European player in toys. Jumbo has sales offices in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and the United Kingdom. They export to more than 25 countries around the world.
In 1980 Jumbo starts the production of Jan van Haasteren Puzzles.

I wrote the above review in September 2023. An old puzzle, made by Jan van Haasteren. But what a fun one and there is also a whole story behind it with the Hockey World Cup in Utrecht at the time. I also like doing the older puzzles. Thanks Jan!
