This is a Formido Publication

Some Jan van Haasteren puzzles have not been available on regular store shelves. In the past, hardware store Formido had a number of puzzles produced specifically for its own use. These puzzles were made by Jumbo, but offered exclusively through Formido itself – for sale in Formido stores, but not available through other channels. On this page, you can read what makes these Formido editions special, how to recognize them, and what is known about them.

What is 'Formido'?

Formido was a Dutch hardware store chain for DIY items, comparable to Praxis, GAMMA, and Karwei. You could go there for tools, paint, wood, garden supplies, sanitary ware, and other DIY materials.

History

  • The first Formido store opened in Waddinxveen in 1976.
  • Formido was part of Maxeda, the same group that also owned Praxis.
  • At its peak, Formido had over 80 stores spread across the Netherlands.

Why does Formido no longer exist?
In 2017, Maxeda decided to discontinue the Formido format. Most stores were converted into Praxis, while other branches were sold to chains such as Hubo or were closed.

What became of Formido?

  • A large part of the former Formidos became Praxis.
  • Approximately 17 branches continued as Hubo.
  • Other stores were taken over by chains such as KlusWijs or disappeared completely.

Many Dutch people still remember Formido from the slogan **“Formido, nice and easy”** and the characteristic yellow and blue corporate identity. Around 2019, the name had almost completely disappeared from the Dutch streetscape.

What are Formido puzzles?

The Jan van Haasteren puzzles from Formido are not regular retail releases.Jumbo produced them on behalf of Formido, in a limited edition. At the time, you could not buy these versions at a toy store or via a webshop – they were intended exclusively as a promotion for Formido customers; in other words, this puzzle was for sale in Formido stores. However, there is no way to tell from the box that they were Formido releases – you could only tell because the number starts with an '8'. More on that further down this page. They are official Jumbo productions, but with a different numbering that you normally encounter less often.

How do you recognize a Formido puzzle?

So that is extremely difficult – or rather: you can't tell from the outside of the puzzle box! You can only recognize a Formido edition by the number on the puzzle box! The serial number starts with a 8 (for example 81170 or 81248). So, non-real collectors won't even notice whether it is a Formido edition or not!

What does a serial number that starts with an 8 mean?

Jumbo uses a specific number series – the so-called 8XXXX series – for puzzles that have not been released through the regular sales channel. These are store-exclusive editions and export versions. Formido puzzles fall into the first category: special editions that Jumbo produced for a specific retailer or client. Other well-known examples of this 8-series include editions for Bart Smit, Intertoys, Kruidvat, and Blokker, as well as export versions for the Scandinavian market. For example:

Overview of all Formido puzzles

In total, Formido has released five 1000-piece puzzles and two 950-piece puzzles. You can see these in the table below:

Are Formido puzzles rare?

No, these are not rare copies, even though Formido no longer exists and these were released in a limited edition. You still come across them regularly on platforms like Marktplaats. However – many people don't even know, when selling that puzzle on Marktplaats, that it was published by Formido. Are you looking for more rare Jan van Haasteren editions?
