Jan van Haasteren Puzzle 'Nijmeegse 4daagse'
I have the puzzle 'Nijmeegse Vierdaagse' | 'Nijmegen Marches' made – this is number 19034, issued in 2016. This puzzle was drawn by the Studio Jan van Haasteren artist Rob Derks. It's this puzzle:

And this box goes with it:

General review Jan van Haasteren puzzle 'Nijmeegse Vierdaagse'
I made a general review about this beautiful puzzle made by Rob Derks:
More about this puzzle
This puzzle was drawn by Rob Derks and often draws inspiration for his puzzles from his living environment. He has been living in Nijmegen for years with his wife and children. The Nijmegen Four Days Marches has been known throughout the Netherlands for many years and thousands of runners / walkers participate in it every year. What is the location of this puzzle in Nijmegen? The Sint Annastraat and that is the street where the walker and participants of the Four Days Marches enter after a very tired four days of walking.
Why is the Sint Annastraat called Via Gladiola?
The Sint Annastraat is also called the Via Gladiola among the walker of the Four Days Marches. It is therefore customary for the walkers to receive gladiolus from the public on the last day of the Four Days Marches in Nijmegen. This flower is a sign of strength and victory. You've earned it if you've walked 30 kilometers or more for four days in a row! Hence the name 'Via Gladiola', where Via is the Latin word for street.
You can see this explanation in a video from Schooltv:
As it says on the website of the organization of the 4daagse, the route is as follows on the last walking day:
“The day of the Via Gladiola. You walk south, cross the pontoon bridge in the Maas in Cuijk, which was especially built for you, and then on your way to… the Via Gladiola!”
Where does the Via Gladiola begin?
Via Gladiola starts at Keizer Karelplein and Via Gladiola ends at Rijksweg (Provincial road 844).
I have drawn the Sint Annastraat on a Google Maps map, so that you can see exactly where the Via Gladiola in Nijmegen begins:
Via Gladiola – the entry of the walkers
A nice video from 2017 of the 101st Nijmegen Four Days Marches, you can see various interviews with walkers who enter the Via Gladiola:
Day 4 of the Nijmegen Four Days Marches thus ends on Sint Annastraat or Via Gladiola. You can see the full route on this map:
And the finish is on the Sint Annastraat, an image of this via Google Maps:
How many kilometers is the Nijmegen 4 Days?
The distances you can walk during the Nijmegen 4Daagse are: 30, 40 and 50 kilometers per day. And of course this takes 4 days 🙂
Which week does the Nijmegen 4 Days start?
The Nijmegen 4 Days starts every year on the 3rd Tuesday in July. Many Four Days Marches are also held in Nijmegen during these four days.
What does it cost to walk the Four Days Marches?
You can assume approximately €250 for non-members (2022) and approximately €220 for members (2022).
Laying the puzzle
I bought this puzzle second hand. Have to say that this one is difficult to get, it is one of the scarcer puzzles. I thought I paid 25-30 euros for it. There were more lovers 🙁
Anyway, I really wanted to make it. So it worked! Below you can see that I make the puzzle on a puzzle mat (green felt). Ideal because then you can easily store and roll up the puzzle. As you can see I have sorted the pieces here and also sorted out the straight edge pieces, if all is well there should be 126, because that is the number of side pieces for a puzzle of 1000 pieces.

And then I always start laying the edges, very exciting if I really managed to find all the edge pieces. That was the case this time, with one exception:

And started with the bright colours, the colors orange and green, the colors of the evening four days. In this case the 'finish flag', and also with the roofs of the houses:

I continued with the orange and green flags hanging over the road and the orange green flags hanging on the houses, that was a really nice puzzle:

I didn't take that many pictures of putting this puzzle together. That's because I mainly put this puzzle in the evening and taking a photo in lamplight doesn't work very well. That reflects. So unfortunately no more pictures of the process, but again of the end result:

Striking about the puzzle - the colors Green and Orange
The many colors of green and orange that you see on this puzzle are striking and these are the colors of the KNWB - the Koninklijke Wandelbond Nederland:

The KNWB has been organizing the Nijmegen Four Days Marches since 1909. Orange and green are the official Four Days Marches colours. There is still a flag that you often encounter during the 4daagse, that is the Dutch flag with the text 'Walk of the World' underneath. That is the flag that is used as the logo for the Nijmegen Four Days Marches (source photo – Website www.4daagse.nl):

Striking about the puzzle - Rob Derks and his family are on the puzzle!
Very nice, Rob Derks has drawn himself and his family on the puzzle. Rob Derks lives in Nijmegen himself and draws a lot of inspiration for themes from his puzzles from the city of Nijmegen and the surrounding area. Rob lives with his wife and 3 children in Nijmegen. Read more about 'Rob Derks and Nijmegen† He has drawn more puzzles about Nijmegen and its surroundings, discover which one!

Striking about the puzzle - The distances of the Nijmegen Four Days Marches
Rob Derks has drawn the distances of the Nijmegen Four Days Marches on a board:

Striking about the puzzle - Erik and Grandpa
Rob has very nicely incorporated an old cartoon character that Jan van Haasteren always drew in the puzzle, namely: Erik and Grandpa. You see Erik that is the little boy with the black hair and Grandpa that is the older man with the yellow headband. In the beautiful book about Jan van Haasteren 'From cartoonist to puzzle phenomenon' more is told about the cartoon characters 'Erik and Opa':

Striking about the puzzle - AC/DC by Rob Derks
In addition to the regular recurring elements of Jan van Haasteren Rob Derks also draws his own recurring elements† And 1 of them is AC/DC, hard to see, but that's that old rock band from the past:

Striking about the puzzle - Signature is Studio JvH
At the bottom right of the puzzle you see 'Studio JvH 2016'. 2016 is the year in which the puzzles were drawn and Studio JvH means that the puzzle was NOT drawn by Jan van Haasteren himself, but by Rob Derks or Dick Heins. Read more about this on the page 'Studio Jan van Haasteren'.

Striking about the puzzle - Watching TV
The two older people on the couch watching the TV broadcast see two shoes, but that's a strange image, because those shoes that walk right next to them - that's the gentleman holding up the windcatcher. Nicely done by Rob Derks!

Striking about the puzzle - ZZ top
Rob Derks draws his own recurring elements and often (in addition to AC/DC) ZZ Top also comes back in the puzzle. ZZ Top was the band from the 80s, and they were indeed two men with long beards:

Striking about the puzzle - The Twins
The Twins are also a regular recurring element of Rob Derks and now you can also see that the Twins participate in the Nijmegen Four Days Marches:

Striking on the puzzle - Gumbys from Monty Python
In the stands you see a Gumbys of Monty Python, Rob was probably a fan of Monty Python! In case you are unfamiliar with the characters in Monty Python, here's a Youtube video of the Gumbys:
And some very nice jokes in the stands, see the green arrows, a man with an egg on his head, a woman with a cup of coffee on her head. EN: yes, the gnome!

Unique variant issued - Woonboulevard Nijmegen
There is another unique copy of this puzzle published by the Woonboulevard Nijmegen. This is very rare and almost impossible to obtain. Rob van Koningsbrugge got this copy and posted it in his Facebook group about Jan van Haasteren puzzles:

What kind of release is this? I had to scour the internet for this. As it turns out: in 2016 there was a 'special' Nijmegen Four Days Marches and it was dominated by the Nijmegen Woonboulevard. In an article by Lingewaard Municipality news it mentions this:
“The Four Days Marches Sunday is all about the Woonboulevard Nijmegen. That day thousands of flyers / tickets are distributed among the visitors of the Four Days Marches festivities and in the evening our team is on all approach roads towards the fireworks to hand out special medals, blinkies. If you wear this blinkie and are photographed by one of our photographers between Sunday 17 July and Friday 22 July, you have a chance to win one of the many housing vouchers worth 50 euros. But that's not all. “The flyers that are handed out are also lottery tickets that give you a chance to win a housing check worth 1.000 euros or one of the many other prizes, such as housing checks worth 500, 250 or 100 euros.” To be eligible for this, you must personally hand in this completed lottery ticket at Woonboulevard Nijmegen on Saturday 23 July at 13.00 pm. We will draw the winning tickets between 13.00:16.00 PM and 23:XNUMX PM. The prizes will only be raffled among those present, so make sure you are there.” Special Four Days Marches puzzles by Jan van Haasteren are available for those who did not win the big prizes. “But be quick, because it's gone. On behalf of all entrepreneurs of Woonboulevard Nijmegen, I wish everyone fantastic Four Days Marches. And see you at our prize festival on Saturday XNUMX July!” said Ben Traa, chairman of Woonboulevard Nijmegen.
The Woonboulevard variant is a rare puzzle

Rob Derks and his hometown Nijmegen
The nice thing is that Rob Derks gets a lot of inspiration from companies and events in Nijmegen and the surrounding area. I have made a special page about this in which everything is described. Knowing more? Read: 'Rob Derks and Nijmegen'.
Another puzzle has appeared about the Nijmegen Four Days Marches
A second puzzle that has appeared about the Nijmegen Four Days Marches is the puzzle 'De Mars' - drawn by Jan van Haasteren. In 'the corridors' I sometimes hear that this is also called the puzzle 'De Blarenprikkers'. A review video can be found here:

This puzzle is in 1 or more search books by Jan van Haasteren. These are not only fun search books to search for recurring elements, you can also ideally use the image of this puzzle as an 'extra' large poster while puzzling! View the overview with our 'Jan van Haasteren search books'
Jan van Haasteren 'Nijmeegse Vierdaagse' - Recurring element 1:1 Milk
The note with '1 Milk' is not very common, but in this puzzle it is:

Jan van Haasteren 'Nijmeegse Vierdaagse' - Recurring element 2: The Shark fin
I think the shark fin also runs the Nijmegen Four Days Marches:

Jan van Haasteren 'Nijmeegse Vierdaagse' - Recurring element 3: Krab
I don't see exactly what Crab is doing, but it looks like he wants to bite all the runners with his teeth or claws:

Jan van Haasteren 'Nijmeegse Vierdaagse' - Recurring element 4: Police and Boef
The police are looking for the crook from above through a window of a house. However, crook is too smart again and is hiding behind the couch:

Jan van Haasteren 'Nijmeegse Vierdaagse' - Recurring element 5: Red White Striped Cat
Fun and hard to find:

Jan van Haasteren 'Nijmeegse Vierdaagse' - Recurring element 6: SuperSlak
Supersnail wins the match at least from his turtle friend:

Jan van Haasteren 'Nijmeegse Vierdaagse' - Recurring element 7: 3 Peepholes
I only saw the 3 peepholes or bullet holes on the back of the sofa later:

Jan van Haasteren 'Nijmeegse Vierdaagse' - Recurring element 8: 3x Calling
The 3x Bellen is also very well hidden, I think Rob Derks has really made a nice search for the recurring elements:

Jan van Haasteren 'Nijmeegse Vierdaagse' - Recurring element 9: AC/DC by Rob Derks
I have already described this above:

Jan van Haasteren 'Nijmeegse Vierdaagse' - Recurring element 10: Baron van Tast to Zeveren
Baron van Tast tot Zeveren is an old cartoon character by Jan van Haasteren. Still one of my favorite characters:

Jan van Haasteren 'Nijmeegse Vierdaagse' - Recurring element 11: Dalmatian Dog / Dog Max
The dog Max is watching attentively as a spectator at the walkers of the Nijmegen Four Days Marches. Dog Max is on the back of the 'more recent puzzle boxes':

Jan van Haasteren 'Nijmeegse Vierdaagse' - Recurring element 12: Fat Woman / Mother-in-law
The Fat Woman or Mother-in-law looks rather angry as usual, father-in-law waves to a well-known bishop (?):

Jan van Haasteren 'Nijmeegse Vierdaagse' - Recurring element 13: Erik and Grandpa
Erik and Opa are described above:

Jan van Haasteren 'Nijmeegse Vierdaagse' - Recurring element 14: The Hands
You always see hands in the puzzles to a greater or lesser extent:

Jan van Haasteren 'Nijmeegse Vierdaagse' - Recurring element 15: The Indian
The Indian was very difficult to find, he does not walk along, but is a spectator:

Jan van Haasteren 'Nijmeegse Vierdaagse' - Recurring element 16: The Dentures
The dentures:

Jan van Haasteren 'Nijmeegse Vierdaagse' - Recurring element 17: Squinting people by Rob Derks
Squinting people are described above:

Jan van Haasteren 'Nijmeegse Vierdaagse' - Recurring element 18: Eyes
You actually always see the Eyes in the puzzles to a greater or lesser extent:

Jan van Haasteren 'Nijmeegse Vierdaagse' - Recurring element 19: Paper Airplane
The paper plane:

Jan van Haasteren 'Nijmeegse Vierdaagse' - Recurring element 20: Periscope
One of the few times you see the periscope looking sad or tired, what could be the reason for this. Could Rob Derks tell us perhaps?

Jan van Haasteren 'Nijmeegse Vierdaagse' - Recurring element 21: Plasters
Only 1x the patch this time:

Jan van Haasteren 'Nijmeegse Vierdaagse' - Recurring element 22: Cat and Mouse
Haha, this one is very nicely made, the mouse has stood untouchable on the flags that are stretched over the road. The heavier cat can't get over that:

Jan van Haasteren 'Nijmeegse Vierdaagse' - Recurring element 23: Rob Derks himself!
This item has already been described above:

Jan van Haasteren 'Nijmeegse Vierdaagse' - Recurring element 24: Sinterklaas
That old good man Sinterklaas is walking along the 4 Days himself! That is quite an achievement and he also looks very tired:

Jan van Haasteren 'Nijmeegse Vierdaagse' - Recurring element 25: The Ghost
Spookje often looks at what is happening from above and you can see that again:

Jan van Haasteren 'Nijmeegse Vierdaagse' - Recurring element 26: Toothpaste and Toothbrush
Are the toothpaste and toothbrush lying next to the pizza by chance, or is it wise to brush your teeth after eating pizza?

Jan van Haasteren 'Nijmeegse Vierdaagse' - Recurring element 27: The Twins of Rob Derks
These items have already been described above:

Jan van Haasteren 'Nijmeegse Vierdaagse' - Recurring element 28: Jan van Haasteren self-portrait
The self-portrait of Jan van Haasteren, he just keeps making drawings, whatever there are for events:

Jan van Haasteren 'Nijmeegse Vierdaagse' - Recurring element 29: ZZ Top by Rob Derks
This items is described above:

How long will it take you to complete this 1000 piece puzzle?
I made the puzzle 'Nijmeegse Vierdaagse' in peace and took several days to complete it. Beautifully made on a puzzle mat on the floor in the living room. I do take the time, but not very precisely, it remains a hobby that puzzles! But to give you an idea of how long it took me to complete this 1000 piece JvH puzzle:
- Explaining the pieces: 20 minutes
- Laying the edges = 20 minutes
- Laying the rest of the pieces = 6 hours
- So it took me a total of 6 hours and 45 minutes to complete this puzzle. That is faster than it takes me on average over a JvH jigsaw puzzle, namely about 8 hours
About Jumbo puzzles

Jumbo (not to be confused with our supermarket Jumbo!) makes toys, games and puzzles. Jumbo, for example, has made the very well-known games such as “Human don't get annoyed” and “Stratego” and “PimPamPet”. Games that have been around for generations and are still widely played by both young and old. Jumbo has been making and developing toys since about 1900. In the early years of the company, only toys from other countries were imported to the Netherlands. However, since about 1930 it was decided to also make their own toys, at the time manufacturing wooden toys, which was very popular at the time. Almost all toys in those years were made of wood. An important spearhead was that the toys made by Jumbo had to be of very good quality; it had to be as strong as an Elephant. An elephant had to stand on it! The red elephant has been the hallmark of Jumbo's games and puzzles for years. The name Jumbo and the red elephant together form the logo from about 1935. The Jumbo elephant is drawn by Mr. Möhr. He worked at an advertising agency and regularly signed for Hausemann & Hötte. Mr Möhr was at one point commissioned to design a beautiful new elephant logo for the Hausemann & Hötte toys. The logo has changed a bit since then. For example, the eye has grown over the years and has dropped slightly more, resulting in a friendlier elephant.
In the past, the elephant was not only used in the color red, but in all kinds of colors such as blue, yellow, black, white and green. All those colors were cozy and playful. For example, one time there was a yellow elephant on the box and the other time a red one. It was usually looked at which color best matched the color of the box. It was not until the end of the 60s that the red elephant was definitively chosen. Red is a color that stands out and attracts attention.
From 1945 Jumbo also started to focus on games made of cardboard. Jumbo has therefore been a guarantee for strong quality for years! Jumbo is a unique Dutch company with a rich history, with its head office in Zaandam. About 130 employees work for Jumbo. With a turnover of €75 million, Jumbo is a medium-sized European player in toys. Jumbo has sales offices in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and the United Kingdom. They export to more than 25 countries around the world.
In 1980 Jumbo starts the production of Jan van Haasteren Puzzles.
Reviews about this puzzle
Post a review | |
I wrote the above review in February 2022. It is really a top puzzle made by Rob Derks, and nice that he lives in Nijmegen himself and knows so much about it. An event that returns every year and a great sporting event. That also deserves a very nice puzzle.
