Jan van Haasteren Puzzle 'Olympic Games'
I made the puzzle 'Olympic Games' (Olympics) - this is number 01666, issue in 1983. I made the puzzle from a 3-in combination box with number 81385. This puzzle is drawn by Jan van Haasteren Studio Jan van Haasteren. It's this puzzle:

and this is the 3-in-1 combo box:

The first Jan van Haasteren puzzle drawn for Jumbo!
This was Jan van Haasteren's first puzzle commissioned by JUMBO! You can distinguish a period at Jan van Haasteren from 'Before Jumbo' and 'After Jumbo' – especially when you are talking about Jan van Haasteren's first puzzle. 'For Jumbo, the first puzzle was therefore the puzzle'Popeye Floor Puzzle (16 Pieces)' and 'After Jumbo', the first puzzle Jan drew was the puzzle 'Olympic Games', from 1983.

This puzzle in the edition of Diset - Green box: rare!
This is a very rare puzzle – in the issue of Diset and in the green box. I made a video of this:
This puzzle in the edition of Diset - Green box: different dimensions
The dimensions of this vertical puzzle are different from those of a normal Jumbo puzzle of 1000 pieces (all sizes Jan van Haasteren puzzles):
– dimensions Diset puzzle 1000 pieces: 72 x 50 centimeters
– dimensions Jumbo puzzle 1000 pieces: 68 x 49 centimeters
The dimensions of this box are also different from those of a normal Jumbo puzzle box of 1000 pieces (all sizes Jan van Haasteren puzzle boxes):
– dimensions Diset puzzle box 1000 pieces: 39 x 27 centimeters
– dimensions Jumbo puzzle box 1000 pieces: 37 x 27,5 centimeters
Does a 1000 Piece puzzle consist of 1000 Pieces?
No, not always! This puzzle has appeared in a variant, where the puzzle box states that there are 1000 pieces in it. But in reality the puzzle itself does not consist of 1000 Pieces. Do you want to know exactly which Jan van Haasteren puzzles these are? Then view the overview 'Jan van Haasteren puzzles with a different number of puzzle pieces in the box'.

| Description | This puzzle is part of a set of four puzzles published by the New Zealand puzzle manufacturer Holdson Funny World (HFW)This puzzle is numbered 08809, as are three other puzzles in this set. For more information about this entire set, please visit the "Holdson's Funny World puzzles 08809This puzzle is rare because all of them were released in New Zealand. It's also more of a collector's item, as all the plates/drawings from these puzzles were also released in a Jumbo version in the Netherlands. There's a set of older puzzles published by Holdson Funny World—and these boxes all look different from the current, recognizable blue Jumbo puzzle boxes. Many of these boxes have multiple bright colors. A total of 48 of these older puzzles were published by Holdson Funny World (HFW), and these are therefore the rarer ones. You hardly ever see these puzzles on marketplaces like Marktplaats. You really have to look on second-hand puzzle trading platforms near New Zealand and Australia. The downside: if you want to buy one, you have to pay a lot of import duties, and the puzzle often takes a long time to arrive. To this day, Jan van Haasteren puzzles are still published in the familiar blue puzzle box. These puzzles in the familiar blue boxes are NOT rare; you can easily order them from an online store in New Zealand. This puzzle, "Olympics," number 08809, is rare. However, the illustration is not, as "Olympics" (Olympic Games) was also released by other brands, such as Jumbo. Its release by HFW makes it rare and often an instant collector's item. It comes in a beautiful, colorful box with these four colors on the four sides: blue, green, red, and pink. On the back of the box, you can see which four puzzles belong to the "set" numbered 08809. |

Laying the puzzle
This time I placed the puzzle in a holiday home, I didn't have a puzzle mat at hand, so I just placed it on the mat in the living room of the holiday home:

As you can see it is a vertical puzzle and I missed 1 piece while sorting the straight edges of the puzzle. You can also see how big the puzzle poster is that comes in the box. The dimensions of the puzzle itself are 68×49 centimeters and the poster is a lot smaller:

Ok with this puzzle I started by matching the puzzle pieces with the same colors. You see a few 'mats' during these Olympics. In addition, there is an innie-mini swimming pool during these Olympic games. By the way, there are a lot of sports drawn on the puzzle by Jan. It also seems like a combination of summer and winter games. In addition to ski jumping, you also see hurdles, for example:

The most difficult were the green pieces on this puzzle, all the grass that was used for sports or where you see people:

Compared to the previous picture you can see that I started with the running track, which was also a difficult part. I didn't find it very easy to make I must say:

Review video of this puzzle
I made this puzzle and made a review video of it:
How long will it take you to complete this puzzle?
I made the puzzle 'Olympic Games' in peace and it also took me several days. Beautiful on a puzzle mat made on the floor in the living room. I do take the time, but not very precisely, it remains a hobby that puzzling! But to give you an idea how long it took me to complete this JvH puzzle of 1000 pieces:
- Explaining the pieces: 20 minutes
- Laying the edges = 25 minutes
- Laying the rest of the pieces = 3 hours and 50 minutes
- Which made me do this puzzle in total = 4 hours and 35 minutes. It used to take me almost always 8 hours, but I have a special tip to be able to puzzle a lot faster
About Jumbo puzzles

Jumbo (not to be confused with our supermarket Jumbo!) makes toys, games and puzzles. Jumbo, for example, has made the very well-known games such as “Human don't get annoyed” and “Stratego” and “PimPamPet”. Games that have been around for generations and are still widely played by both young and old. Jumbo has been making and developing toys since about 1900. In the early years of the company, only toys from other countries were imported to the Netherlands. However, since about 1930 it was decided to also make their own toys, at the time manufacturing wooden toys, which was very popular at the time. Almost all toys in those years were made of wood. An important spearhead was that the toys made by Jumbo had to be of very good quality; it had to be as strong as an Elephant. An elephant had to stand on it! The red elephant has been the hallmark of Jumbo's games and puzzles for years. The name Jumbo and the red elephant together form the logo from about 1935. The Jumbo elephant is drawn by Mr. Möhr. He worked at an advertising agency and regularly signed for Hausemann & Hötte. Mr Möhr was at one point commissioned to design a beautiful new elephant logo for the Hausemann & Hötte toys. The logo has changed a bit since then. For example, the eye has grown over the years and has dropped slightly more, resulting in a friendlier elephant.
In the past, the elephant was not only used in the color red, but in all kinds of colors such as blue, yellow, black, white and green. All those colors were cozy and playful. For example, one time there was a yellow elephant on the box and the other time a red one. It was usually looked at which color best matched the color of the box. It was not until the end of the 60s that the red elephant was definitively chosen. Red is a color that stands out and attracts attention.
From 1945 Jumbo also started to focus on games made of cardboard. Jumbo has therefore been a guarantee for strong quality for years! Jumbo is a unique Dutch company with a rich history, with its head office in Zaandam. About 130 employees work for Jumbo. With a turnover of €75 million, Jumbo is a medium-sized European player in toys. Jumbo has sales offices in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and the United Kingdom. They export to more than 25 countries around the world.
In 1980 Jumbo starts the production of Jan van Haasteren Puzzles.
Reviews about this puzzle
Post a review | |
I wrote the above review in July 2023. It was special, because this was Jan van Haasteren's first puzzle for Jumbo. Would he have been satisfied with it himself? I have seen a puzzle with a lot of experience in it. You just keep looking at what's happening. Remains a special puzzle, also because of the rare variants that have been released
