Description

De Holdson Funny World – St. George and the Dragon is a special and relatively rare puzzle from the New Zealand puzzle manufacturer Holdson. This edition was published in 2014 and is particularly popular among collectors, because it is offered only sporadically outside Australia and New Zealand.

A special anniversary edition

This puzzle is part of a unique series of four Funny World puzzles that all feature the number 09488 wear. The series was released on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of Holdson, which was founded in 1939. Therefore, many copies feature a special 75th Anniversary logo to be found, making this edition immediately recognizable as an anniversary puzzle.

The image was designed by Jan van Haasteren, whose humorous and busy drawing style is known worldwide among puzzle enthusiasts. Although the image is also known from other editions, such as a Jumbo version, the Holdson edition has its own collector's value thanks to its limited availability and the anniversary background.

Hard to obtain

For collectors in Europe, this puzzle is often difficult to obtain. Copies usually have to be imported from New Zealand or Australia, meaning shipping costs, import duties, and longer delivery times often play a role. Precisely because of this, this edition is not often offered on the second-hand market.

Part of the blue Funny World series

The puzzle belongs to the well-known blue boxes of the Funny World series. Between 2014 and 2026, a total of 40 puzzles. In all years, four new puzzles were released; however, only in the years 2019 and 2025 was no set of four puzzles (of 1000 pieces) released.

Features

  • Released in 2014
  • Part of it Holdson's 75th anniversary
  • Illustration of Jan van Haasteren
  • Belongs to the Funny World series
  • Rare edition outside Australia and New Zealand
  • Standard puzzle piece shapes
  • Often featuring a special anniversary logo on sealed copies

A sought-after collector's item

For collectors of Jan van Haasteren puzzles and international editions, is St. George and the Dragon An interesting collector's item that does not often turn up. The combination of the anniversary edition, limited availability, and the popular illustration by Jan van Haasteren makes this puzzle a special addition to any collection.

DescriptionThis is a rare puzzle and that is because this is a publication by the American puzzle manufacturer Ceaco. Within Ceaco you have various puzzle series and this is the edition that falls within the 'Cartoon Capers' series. Within the puzzles of 550 pieces, the Cartoon Capers Ceaco's series has a unique numbering system, running from 2371-01 to 2371-15. This Cartoon Capers series therefore comprises 15 puzzles of 550 pieces. For die-hard puzzle collectors, the challenge is to acquire the entire series. This drawing is not unique, of course, as "St. George and the Dragon (or The Opera)" has also appeared in other puzzles with different piece counts. But Ceaco's uniqueness makes this puzzle rarer and therefore more expensive.

DescriptionYou don't see these very often. More of a collector's item. This puzzle has also appeared in a normal Jumbo box in 1000 pieces. However, this is a flat box and you will receive this as a prize if you participated in the Bankgiro lottery. The advantage of this flat box is that they sometimes fit through the letterbox and therefore had to be sent as a package. Practice shows that this was not always possible for everyone. I have created two extensive pages for this: Bankgiro Lottery puzzles en Friends lottery puzzles. All puzzles that appeared in flat boxes are:
  • Middle Ages (1000 Pieces)
  • German Beer Festival (1000 Pieces)
  • The Opera (1000 Pieces)
  • The Mars (1000 Pieces)
  • On Land, On Sea and in the Air (1000 Pieces) (2x, only the name on these two boxes differs slightly)
  • De Oranje Post NL puzzle 500 Pieces. Especially for Post NL employees (2018 and artist is Rob Derks)

Matches 'The Opera' (1000 Pieces) and 'Misunderstood Talent' (350 Pieces)

I made a nice comparison between these two puzzles, there are clear similarities:

    Laying the puzzle

I always make the puzzles on a puzzle mat, so that I can move them easily and I also immediately find out all straight edges:
Jan van Haasteren 'The Opera' 1000 pieces placed on mat
And as you can see I was able to find all the straight pieces and I always start by laying the edges:
Jan van Haasteren 'The Opera' 1000 pieces of edges laid

Here I've finished about 40% of the puzzle and I've started laying out the red edges of the stage. By the way, this puzzle is about 'Saint George and the Dragon', who are on stage. But of course all kinds of strange and crazy things happen in the audience. The well-known Jan-van-Haasteren chaos! Be sure to watch my review video on this page in which I explain all the fun things:
Jan van Haasteren 'The Opera' 1000 pieces 50pct finished
The most difficult were all the players in the orchestra, because they all wear the same suit in the same colors. Striking appearances there too, such as Hardy from Laurel&Hardy:
Jan van Haasteren 'The Opera' 1000 pieces 95pct finished

and finally I finished the puzzle:

This puzzle contains the recurring element 'Jane!!'

Jane is not actually a recurring element, but she appears rarely. For many this is the great mystery who is Jane and in which puzzle is Jane? Do you want to know in which puzzles Jane appears? Check out our page about 'Jane' and the recurring elements Jan van Haasteren. There you can read all about the mysterious Jane. Here you see Jane:

How long will it take you to complete this 1000 piece puzzle?

I made the puzzle 'The Opera' in peace and it also took me several days. Beautiful on a puzzle mat made on the floor in the living room. I do take the time, but not very precisely, it remains a hobby that puzzling! But to give you an idea how long it took me to complete this JvH puzzle of 1000 pieces:

    About Jumbo puzzles

    Jumbo_Logo
Jumbo (not to be confused with our supermarket Jumbo!) makes toys, games and puzzles. Jumbo, for example, has made the very well-known games such as “Human don't get annoyed” and “Stratego” and “PimPamPet”. Games that have been around for generations and are still widely played by both young and old. Jumbo has been making and developing toys since about 1900. In the early years of the company, only toys from other countries were imported to the Netherlands. However, since about 1930 it was decided to also make their own toys, at the time manufacturing wooden toys, which was very popular at the time. Almost all toys in those years were made of wood. An important spearhead was that the toys made by Jumbo had to be of very good quality; it had to be as strong as an Elephant. An elephant had to stand on it! The red elephant has been the hallmark of Jumbo's games and puzzles for years. The name Jumbo and the red elephant together form the logo from about 1935. The Jumbo elephant is drawn by Mr. Möhr. He worked at an advertising agency and regularly signed for Hausemann & Hötte. Mr Möhr was at one point commissioned to design a beautiful new elephant logo for the Hausemann & Hötte toys. The logo has changed a bit since then. For example, the eye has grown over the years and has dropped slightly more, resulting in a friendlier elephant.

In the past, the elephant was not only used in the color red, but in all kinds of colors such as blue, yellow, black, white and green. All those colors were cozy and playful. For example, one time there was a yellow elephant on the box and the other time a red one. It was usually looked at which color best matched the color of the box. It was not until the end of the 60s that the red elephant was definitively chosen. Red is a color that stands out and attracts attention.

From 1945 Jumbo also started to focus on games made of cardboard. Jumbo has therefore been a guarantee for strong quality for years! Jumbo is a unique Dutch company with a rich history, with its head office in Zaandam. About 130 employees work for Jumbo. With a turnover of €75 million, Jumbo is a medium-sized European player in toys. Jumbo has sales offices in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and the United Kingdom. They export to more than 25 countries around the world.

In 1980 Jumbo starts the production of Jan van Haasteren Puzzles.

    Nice!

I wrote the above review in June 2023. Nice Jan van Haasteren, drawing from 2012 again. Many recurring elements. And of course - the very well hidden Jane. Cherry on the Jan van Haasteren cake!
