Top!

I wrote the above review in May 2023. It's a really fun puzzle. I hadn't yet completed the 'cash register' puzzle, I think that makes a difference. But there is so much to see and do in the Supermarket. All chaos! Nice combination with the anniversary of Poiesz

Which Jubilee did Poiesz celebrate? 100 year anniversary!

Poiesz Supermarkets celebrated their 100th anniversary, exactly on April 19, 2023! This was celebrated with various 'Jubilee Bangers', as you can see in their folder. One of those stunners is this Jan van Haasteren puzzle in a limited edition. So it is a Limited Edition. Because it says Op=Op in their folder. The promotion is further described as follows: 'Together with suppliers we have developed a number of unique jubilee products to celebrate our 100th anniversary this year. Each timelessly fun and delicious'. In addition to the Jan van Haasteren puzzle, you could also buy socks with 'Poiesz 100 Years' printed on them. Per pair for 1 euro.
The Poiesz supermarket was founded on April 19, 1923 and will therefore celebrate its 19th anniversary and existence on April 2023, 100.

What is the history of Poiesz?
Establishment of Poiesz – On April 19, 1923, Lodewijk Poiesz and his wife Wietske open a 12m² greengrocer's shop on Havenstraat in Sneek. Due to the success of the shop on the Havenstraat, Lodewijk Poiesz is looking for a larger building. He buys the Grootzand 30. This too soon becomes too small. Over the years, the business has been renovated and expanded three times. Gerard and Willem Poiesz – the sons of Wietske and Lodewijk – peddle fruit and vegetables on a cargo bike and with a handcart in the working-class neighborhoods of Sneek. This provides an important additional turnover for the company. Theo, the youngest son, was already helping in the shop. The Fruithal is moving from Grootzand 30 to the larger building at Grootzand 22 in Sneek. After a tip from a neighbor who had just returned from a business trip from America, the new business is called 'Supermarket'. Poiesz joins Superunie, a purchasing organization that represents independent supermarket organizations in the Netherlands. Many of the supermarket chains affiliated with Superunie are, like Poiesz, family businesses. The professional knowledge of the regional and local market often gives the members affiliated with Superunie an advantage. On September 1, 1969, the Poiesz supermarket in Franeker on the Jan Stapertlaan opens its doors.

Where does the name Poiesz come from?
This name of the supermarkets is the name of the founder. On May 23, 1978, Lodewijk Poiesz, the founder of Poiesz Supermarkets, dies.

I made a review video of this puzzle with the recurring elements in it:

How long will it take you to complete this 1000 piece puzzle?

I completed the puzzle 'Poiesz Supermarkets 100 Years' in peace and it also took several days. Beautiful on a puzzle mat made on the floor in the living room. I do take the time, but not very precisely, it remains a hobby that puzzling! But to give you an idea how long it took me to complete this JvH puzzle of 1000 pieces:

  • Explaining the pieces: 20 minutes
  • Laying the edges = 20 minutes
  • Laying the rest of the pieces = 5 hours and 25 minutes
  • So it took me a total of 6 hours and 5 minutes to complete this puzzle. That is faster than it takes me on average over a JvH jigsaw puzzle, namely about 8 hours

About Jumbo puzzles

Jumbo_Logo
Jumbo (not to be confused with our supermarket Jumbo!) makes toys, games and puzzles. Jumbo, for example, has made the very well-known games such as “Human don't get annoyed” and “Stratego” and “PimPamPet”. Games that have been around for generations and are still widely played by both young and old. Jumbo has been making and developing toys since about 1900. In the early years of the company, only toys from other countries were imported to the Netherlands. However, since about 1930 it was decided to also make their own toys, at the time manufacturing wooden toys, which was very popular at the time. Almost all toys in those years were made of wood. An important spearhead was that the toys made by Jumbo had to be of very good quality; it had to be as strong as an Elephant. An elephant had to stand on it! The red elephant has been the hallmark of Jumbo's games and puzzles for years. The name Jumbo and the red elephant together form the logo from about 1935. The Jumbo elephant is drawn by Mr. Möhr. He worked at an advertising agency and regularly signed for Hausemann & Hötte. Mr Möhr was at one point commissioned to design a beautiful new elephant logo for the Hausemann & Hötte toys. The logo has changed a bit since then. For example, the eye has grown over the years and has dropped slightly more, resulting in a friendlier elephant.

In the past, the elephant was not only used in the color red, but in all kinds of colors such as blue, yellow, black, white and green. All those colors were cozy and playful. For example, one time there was a yellow elephant on the box and the other time a red one. It was usually looked at which color best matched the color of the box. It was not until the end of the 60s that the red elephant was definitively chosen. Red is a color that stands out and attracts attention.

From 1945 Jumbo also started to focus on games made of cardboard. Jumbo has therefore been a guarantee for strong quality for years! Jumbo is a unique Dutch company with a rich history, with its head office in Zaandam. About 130 employees work for Jumbo. With a turnover of €75 million, Jumbo is a medium-sized European player in toys. Jumbo has sales offices in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and the United Kingdom. They export to more than 25 countries around the world.

In 1980 Jumbo starts the production of Jan van Haasteren Puzzles.
