Remia and Jan van Haasteren

Jan van Haasteren puzzle "Remia Sauce Factory – 100th Anniversary Edition"

In 2025, Remia will celebrate an impressive milestone: 100 years of bringing flavor to the table. To commemorate this anniversary, a unique edition of a Jan van Haasteren puzzle has been released, themed around the famous Remia sauce factory. This special edition pays tribute to a century of innovation, humor, and Dutch conviviality—exactly what both Remia and Jan van Haasteren are known for. Here's a video Remia made about their centennial:

A century of Remia – from margarine to sauce icon

The Remia story begins in 1925 in Den Dolder, where the young entrepreneur Arie de Rooij started a small margarine factory. On October 19, 1925, Arie de Rooij began selling margarine from a bicycle cart in Amersfoort. Officially, Remia therefore considers October 19 as its founding date. The name Remia stands for "Roeij's Elektrische Margarine Industrie Arie." At a time when margarine was still made by hand, Arie was one of the first to introduce electric production. This laid the foundation for what would become one of the Netherlands' most beloved sauce brands. In the decades that followed, Remia continued to expand its product range—from margarine and cooking fats to mayonnaise, French fry sauce, ketchup, barbecue, and grill sauces. The cheerful yellow bottles of Fritessaus Classic, in particular, became a household name in almost every Dutch household. Innovation, quality and taste have always been central, but also the feeling of enjoying together – something that still characterises the brand today.

The anniversary puzzle – Remia in the style of Jan van Haasteren

For its centennial, Remia collaborated with Jan van Haasteren and Jumbo Puzzles on a festive anniversary edition of the puzzle "The Chocolate Factory," which was transformed for the occasion into the "Remia Sauce Factory." In the characteristically chaotic and humorous Van Haasteren universe, we see a factory full of employees, machines, bottles of French fry sauce, and of course, a healthy dose of craziness. There's always something going on—from messy sauce makers to partying colleagues. Fans will also recognize the familiar Jan van Haasteren characters moving through the factory. The 1000-piece puzzle includes a special anniversary poster, making it a true collector's item for both puzzlers and fans of the Remia brand.

Remia 100 years – an ode to Dutch food culture

At Remia, this anniversary year is all about gratitude and innovation. Under the motto "100 Years on the Table," the company reflects on a century of flavor, collaboration, and family spirit. At the same time, Remia is looking ahead with sustainable initiatives and updated packaging, preparing the brand for the future. The anniversary puzzle aligns perfectly with this: a cheerful tribute to one hundred years of Remia, wrapped in Jan van Haasteren's distinctive humor.

About Jumbo puzzles

Jumbo_Logo
Jumbo (not to be confused with our supermarket Jumbo!) makes toys, games and puzzles. Jumbo, for example, has made the very well-known games such as “Human don't get annoyed” and “Stratego” and “PimPamPet”. Games that have been around for generations and are still widely played by both young and old. Jumbo has been making and developing toys since about 1900. In the early years of the company, only toys from other countries were imported to the Netherlands. However, since about 1930 it was decided to also make their own toys, at the time manufacturing wooden toys, which was very popular at the time. Almost all toys in those years were made of wood. An important spearhead was that the toys made by Jumbo had to be of very good quality; it had to be as strong as an Elephant. An elephant had to stand on it! The red elephant has been the hallmark of Jumbo's games and puzzles for years. The name Jumbo and the red elephant together form the logo from about 1935. The Jumbo elephant is drawn by Mr. Möhr. He worked at an advertising agency and regularly signed for Hausemann & Hötte. Mr Möhr was at one point commissioned to design a beautiful new elephant logo for the Hausemann & Hötte toys. The logo has changed a bit since then. For example, the eye has grown over the years and has dropped slightly more, resulting in a friendlier elephant.

In the past, the elephant was not only used in the color red, but in all kinds of colors such as blue, yellow, black, white and green. All those colors were cozy and playful. For example, one time there was a yellow elephant on the box and the other time a red one. It was usually looked at which color best matched the color of the box. It was not until the end of the 60s that the red elephant was definitively chosen. Red is a color that stands out and attracts attention.

From 1945 Jumbo also started to focus on games made of cardboard. Jumbo has therefore been a guarantee for strong quality for years! Jumbo is a unique Dutch company with a rich history, with its head office in Zaandam. About 130 employees work for Jumbo. With a turnover of €75 million, Jumbo is a medium-sized European player in toys. Jumbo has sales offices in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and the United Kingdom. They export to more than 25 countries around the world.

In 1980 Jumbo starts the production of Jan van Haasteren Puzzles.

Remia or Droste

Yes, definitely Remia! Fun, and yet a little different. I'd already made the Chocolate Factory or Drost, but it would be really fun to make Remia again. There's a nice story behind it too.
