What do you encounter when you have made this Jan van Haasteren jigsaw puzzle?
The nice thing about these Safari puzzles by Jan van Haasteren is that you see a lot of animals in the Puzzle. And you also see a lot of people on this puzzle. But the funny thing is that all the animals on this Safari puzzle have a lot of fun and fun. But the people on this puzzle who seem to be having less fun. For example, the animals you see on this Safari puzzle are many monkeys, a crocodile, a hippopotamus, a rhinoceros, elephants, giraffes, snakes, pumas, Jaguar, a crab and many more I have animals; too many to mention. You can also see the things that people normally do on a Safari because they drive around in a Jeep and take pictures of the animals. But unlike a normal Safari, for example, a car is being led away by monkeys and there are animals on top of a car, so that the Safari car can't go any further. What you also see on this puzzle is an animal run competition and who wins there of course: that is super snail. There are many funny elements in this puzzle and that really makes it a search puzzle by Jan van Haasteren. It is also the only puzzle where Santa Claus is in a striped suit. The suit that is similar to the stripes of the zebra he is on. AND: this is the only puzzle where you see two shark fins.
Laying this puzzle
I made this puzzle on a puzzle mat of 1 meter 60 wide and 90 centimeters high. I find that useful, because I regularly have to move the puzzle again. I bought this puzzle via Facebook, for a second hand price, I think it's ideal to buy a puzzle by Jan van Haasteren cheaply, put it together and then sell it again via Facebook Marketplace. The nice thing is that you will also find a self-made poster in the box, for example. And that is certainly handy, because this puzzle comes in a combi box (2-in-1). The only image you have are the images on the box, and they are very small. Such a poster is therefore very welcome, albeit that the format was not yet very large, but many times better than those very small images on the box. AND: the edges were already in a separate bag, which saved a lot of searching. Here's how the puzzle came in the box:

Then I started to lay out all the pieces on my puzzle mat:

And again the photo of the poster that they had made themselves, I think printed and then laminated. Thank you, very nice. I will also resell it this way:

I always start by laying the edges and then sorting pieces together by color, and you can see the result below after 2 hours of puzzling. First I collected all the pieces of the safari cars and the giraffes:

Then the result after puzzling for 3 hours and 45 minutes, also placed a large piece of the river, those pieces of water were also easy to find:

A little further, cars as good as finished, Sinterklaas and the giraffes in the top left are almost finished:

The trees with all that greenery were really difficult and I saved it until later, that was really trial-and-error, but the animal-running contest at the bottom left is far off, very nice, but also difficult to explain:

And almost done. I have to say that I really had trouble with the elephants, there are several and it is almost impossible to see which part belongs to which elephant:

And yes!! The end result is there, a very nice puzzle to make, especially because there are many animals in it.

And again everything in the photo, so you can see how big the poster is compared to the puzzle and the box:

More about JvH's jigsaw puzzle 'Safari'
I thought to myself what is 'Going on Safari' anyway? Would Jan van Haasteren have delved into this or does he assume this as general knowledge? The following describes well what 'Going on Safari' means and where it comes from, with the source Safari-Planner.com:
What is a Safari?
Why do we talk about a safari, it is just a holiday or tour? The word safari originates from Swahili meaning “long journey”. A safari is therefore a long journey under adventurous conditions. The Swahili word safari is ultimately derived from the Arabic word سفر (safar) which means journey. A safari involves traveling alone or accompanied by locals for a longer period of time through the bush or jungle. In the past, this was mainly focused on hunting big game. The safari is now synonymous with a tour through African countries where one or more natural parks are visited. The tourists “shoot” the big game with their photo or film cameras. The tours through the nature parks are also called “game drives”.
Safari accommodation
Staying in so-called safari lodges is part of the safari experience. These are accommodations, often located in or just on the edge of the African nature parks. In addition to stone-built lodges, they can also consist of permanent tented camps, also known as tented lodges. In some areas, accommodation is not allowed all year round. Mobile tent camps are being built there.
In all cases, the safari accommodations provide a beautiful atmosphere and you can enjoy the African bush. After a long day of game drives you can relax and enjoy the African sunset while enjoying a snack and drink.
Travel guidance on a Safari
Many safaris are guided by local guides or park rangers. In East Africa it is unusual for people to drive themselves in the nature parks without an escort. This is because the distances are unclear, there is no signage and the condition of the roads is very bad. Also from a safety point of view (for wildlife) it is a good idea to have a ranger with you. In addition, they are generally very good at spotting wildlife.
In southern Africa, the infrastructure is better and it is often possible to do a self-drive safari.
General review about the Safari puzzle
I made a general review about this jigsaw puzzle, in which you see some nice elements of this puzzle:
Puzzle in the Princess Máxima Center for Pediatric Oncology in Utrecht
Since March 4, 2025, three Jan van Haasteren puzzles have been hanging in the Princess Máxima Center for pediatric oncology in Utrecht, namely:

Jan van Haasteren 'Safari' 1000 pieces - Recurring elements
The nice thing about this puzzle is that after puzzling there is still a kind of search puzzle. You are looking for the fixed recurring elements of Jan van Haasteren. Can you find them all, or are they just not there?? The crab, the teeth, the shark fin, the Tax Official, the arrows, the hands, the eyes, etc etc. There are many in this puzzle, and I have made videos and photos of them below. Try looking for them yourself before viewing them below.
This puzzle was once made during the Dutch National Championships Puzzle
Nice to know, this puzzle was used during the NK Puzzle. During the preliminary round in Reek on 26-10-2019, a team consists of 4 people. With 4 people they have put this puzzle in a time of 01:13:04. So if you think you can participate in the Dutch National Championships? Then multiply this time x4 and you have an indication whether you are a fast puzzler. By the way: puzzle the NK is especially fun and fun to participate in!
This puzzle also appeared in a very rare variant - 'Safari' Published by Beverly Enterprises
This puzzle has also been released in a very rare variant. This is a rare puzzle.

| Description | The puzzle "Safari" is almost never seen. It is published by Beverly Enterprises, which is stated on the bottom left of the box. You can also see the Jumbo logo and the name of Jan van Haasteren, who drew this puzzle. "Safari" is one of the rarest puzzles you can find and costs around €630 to €680. I paid a little more for it myself. This puzzle belongs to "Het Circus", which I discussed in another video. But this "Circus" is much less rare than the "Safari". These two puzzles together form a set: "Safari" has number 61-336, and "Het Circus" has number 61-337. Beverly has released more of these sets, such as 61-233 and 61-234, and 61-242 and 61-243 and 65-163 and 65-164. The puzzle pieces of this puzzle were still completely sealed and the box is in perfect condition. The dimensions of the puzzle are 72 by 49 cm, which is slightly larger than the standard dimensions of Jumbo puzzles (68 by 49 cm). The number of the puzzle also tells us something: the "6" stands for the price range and the "1" means that it is a puzzle of 1000 pieces. For puzzles of 500 pieces, the number starts with "65". Whereby the "5" stands for 500 pieces. The box also contains a description of Jan van Haasteren, who used to be a cartoonist and later started designing puzzles. He also made advertising posters. Beverly's slogan, "Beverly will create your enjoyable time", can be found on the side of the box. The address of their website is also included, although there are no rare puzzles on it. The back of the box contains questions and answers, probably about how to glue the puzzle, something that is quite common in Japan. Furthermore, there are examples of other Beverly puzzles listed. "Safari" is a puzzle that is special for real collectors - the edition by Beverly (!). On the box, Jane is depicted with a yellow sticker on her blouse, a nice detail for fans of Jan van Haasteren. This puzzle has also been released in other formats, such as a round ball (240 pieces) and a combi box. |

The Ceaco - Cartoon Capers 550 piece edition is a rare edition

| Description | This is a rare puzzle and that is because this is a publication by the American puzzle manufacturer Ceaco. Within Ceaco you have various puzzle series and this is the edition that falls within the 'Cartoon Capers' series. Within the puzzles of 550 pieces, the Cartoon Capers Ceaco series has a separate numbering and runs from 2371-01 to 2371-15. So there are 15 puzzles of 550 pieces within this Cartoon Capers series. For the 'die-hard' puzzle collectors, the challenge is to obtain this entire series. This drawing is of course not unique, because 'Safari (or Safari)' has also appeared in other puzzles with different numbers of pieces. But Ceaco makes this puzzle unique and rarer and therefore more expensive. |

Jan van Haasteren puzzle 'Safari' - recurring element 1: The 3 holes
The 3 holes do not always appear in a JvH puzzle and are not always easy to find, but this time they are there:

Jan van Haasteren puzzle 'Safari' - recurring element 2: The Bril
The Glasses are certainly a recurring element, but often very difficult to find. This time I was even able to find two glasses, the glasses in the second picture are not 'real' glasses, because they fall off the head of a person, but still, shown anyway:

Jan van Haasteren puzzle 'Safari' - recurring element 3: The Teeth
The Teeth was really difficult this time, because you almost always see them with the toothpaste with the glass (you can find it at the top of the tree, near the water), but that was not the case in this puzzle. So I thought the teeth wouldn't be there, until I suddenly found them, hard to see, but you see the teeth lying to the left of the blue car, on the ground:

Jan van Haasteren puzzle 'Safari' - recurring element 4: De Haaienvin
Aaahh, what is happening here, there are 2 shark fins!! Never seen before, always always 1 shark fin. But you see them both:

Jan van Haasteren puzzle 'Safari' - recurring element 5: The Hands
You almost always see the hands and in the strangest places, now again, I didn't look them all up, but see if you can find them all yourself in this puzzle:

Jan van Haasteren puzzle 'Safari' - recurring element 6: The Indian
The Indian is there again and looks with amazement at the crocodile, hard to find:

Jan van Haasteren puzzle 'Safari' - recurring element 7: Yellow Jane Stickers
The yellow stickers with Jane I always find it quite a challenge to find them all. This time I found no less than 14 and as you can see in the video I had to add a number so I wouldn't forget one:

Jan van Haasteren puzzle 'Safari' - recurring element 8: The Krab
The Krab certainly participates often, and here he is in the running competition, which unfortunately he is not going to win:

Jan van Haasteren puzzle 'Safari' - recurring element 9: The Eyes
There are often several eyes, I have not looked them all up, see if you can find them all yourself. Sometimes very well hidden, by the way:

Jan van Haasteren puzzle 'Safari' - recurring element 10: The Arrow
I think the Arrow is a nice element, and sometimes difficult to find, this time too, but it is there:

Jan van Haasteren puzzle 'Safari' - recurring element 11: The Plasters
Yes! The Plasters, I find just as challenging as the yellow Jane stickers, and I found 7 of them, assume they are all, here too I had to number them again in the video, otherwise I didn't know where they would be:

Jan van Haasteren puzzle 'Safari' - recurring element 12: Cat or Kat
Cat or Kat is always super fun, because he has his own experience in the puzzles, often he tries to grab a mouse or a bird. And sure enough, do you see the little mouse near him?:

Jan van Haasteren puzzle 'Safari' - recurring element 13: The Cigar
The Cigar, always difficult and also in this puzzle 2 cigars, just like 2 shark fins, very nice:

Jan van Haasteren puzzle 'Safari' - recurring element 14: Super snail
Superlak participates in the running competition of the animals, and yes, who will win it?? super snail! Watch my video to get a better idea of this exciting match:

Jan van Haasteren puzzle 'Safari' - recurring element 15: The Saw
The Saw was hard to find, but it is there, and in this case saws away the ground under one of the giraffe's paws:

Jan van Haasteren puzzle 'Safari' - recurring element 16: Jane!!
Jane is not actually a regular recurring element, but she appears rarely, to date she has been seen in only 13 JvH puzzles. Do you want to know in which puzzles Jane appears? Check out our page about 'Jane' and the recurring elements Jan van Haasteren. There you can read all about the mysterious Jane:

Jan van Haasteren puzzle 'Safari' - recurring element 17: The Periscope
You rarely see the Periscope where it belongs, namely on a submarine! So in the puzzle 'Safari' everything is correct:
Jan van Haasteren puzzle 'Safari' - recurring element 18: Sinterklaas
Sinterklaas is never actually in a costume other than his red robe, but this time his cloak has taken over the stripes of the zebras, very funny. Is he less noticeable, but he doesn't look as fit or happy:
How big is the puzzle Jan van Haasteren 'Safari' 1000 pieces?
This puzzle also has dimensions of 68 (width) by 49 (height). I made the puzzle on a puzzle mat of 1 meter 60 wide and 90 centimeters high.
How long will it take you to complete this 1000 piece puzzle?
I made the puzzle Safari in peace and also took several days. Beautifully made on a puzzle mat on the floor in the living room. I do take the time, but again not very precisely, it remains a hobby that puzzles! But to give you an idea of how long it took me to complete this 1000 piece JvH puzzle:
- Explaining the pieces: 20 minutes
- Laying the edges = 40 minutes
- Laying the rest of the pieces = 7 hours and 45 minutes
- So it took me a total of 8 hours and 45 minutes to complete this puzzle. In my opinion that is a little longer than it takes on average for a JvH jigsaw puzzle, namely about 8 hours
This puzzle is in 1 or more search books
This puzzle is in 1 or more search books by Jan van Haasteren. These are not only fun search books to search for recurring elements, you can also ideally use the image of this puzzle as an 'extra' large poster while puzzling! View the overview with our 'Jan van Haasteren search books'
About Jumbo puzzles

Jumbo (not to be confused with our supermarket Jumbo!) makes toys, games and puzzles. Jumbo, for example, has made the very well-known games such as “Human don't get annoyed” and “Stratego” and “PimPamPet”. Games that have been around for generations and are still widely played by both young and old. Jumbo has been making and developing toys since about 1900. In the early years of the company, only toys from other countries were imported to the Netherlands. However, since about 1930 it was decided to also make their own toys, at the time manufacturing wooden toys, which was very popular at the time. Almost all toys in those years were made of wood. An important spearhead was that the toys made by Jumbo had to be of very good quality; it had to be as strong as an Elephant. An elephant had to stand on it! The red elephant has been the hallmark of Jumbo's games and puzzles for years. The name Jumbo and the red elephant together form the logo from about 1935. The Jumbo elephant is drawn by Mr. Möhr. He worked at an advertising agency and regularly signed for Hausemann & Hötte. Mr Möhr was at one point commissioned to design a beautiful new elephant logo for the Hausemann & Hötte toys. The logo has changed a bit since then. For example, the eye has grown over the years and has dropped slightly more, resulting in a friendlier elephant.
In the past, the elephant was not only used in the color red, but in all kinds of colors such as blue, yellow, black, white and green. All those colors were cozy and playful. For example, one time there was a yellow elephant on the box and the other time a red one. It was usually looked at which color best matched the color of the box. It was not until the end of the 60s that the red elephant was definitively chosen. Red is a color that stands out and attracts attention.
From 1945 Jumbo also started to focus on games made of cardboard. Jumbo has therefore been a guarantee for strong quality for years! Jumbo is a unique Dutch company with a rich history, with its head office in Zaandam. About 130 employees work for Jumbo. With a turnover of €75 million, Jumbo is a medium-sized European player in toys. Jumbo has sales offices in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and the United Kingdom. They export to more than 25 countries around the world.
In 1980 Jumbo starts the production of Jan van Haasteren Puzzles.

I wrote the above review and made the puzzle Safari in October 2020. It was a very fun puzzle to make, also a tricky one, with nice puzzle challenges. I also really enjoy making an animal puzzle. And: as usual, there is a lot to see on this puzzle. You just keep looking, with all kinds of nice Jan van Haasteren search elements. Definitely a 5 star rating!
