I wrote the above review in June 2023. It really is a unique puzzle and fantastically made by Rob Derks. He has incorporated a lot into this puzzle! There's soooo much going on. I was also able to find out the background of this puzzle and then the puzzle speaks even more. What a great puzzle!

More about this puzzle
This puzzle is an anniversary puzzle! And a very special one. This puzzle was revealed during the NK puzzles held on May 7, 2023 in Roelofarendsveen. This puzzle was part of the XXXL puzzle 'Jan van Haasteren XXXL Puzzle 30200 Pieces – 10th anniversary Jan van Haasteren studio'. This XXXL puzzle consisted of 10 puzzles and was already announced on February 24, 2023 (Jan van Haasteren's 87th birthday!). HOWEVER - of these XXXL puzzles, only 9 were announced on February 24, 2023 and the last 10th puzzle was only revealed on May 7, 2023. An exciting denouement during the NK Puzzles 2023.
The puzzle and the box
I made the puzzle '10 Years of Jan van Haasteren Studio', it has number 1110100028, published on May 7, 2023. This puzzle is drawn by Robert Derks Studio Jan van Haasteren. This is the box:

and this is the puzzle:

Who and what is the 'Jan van Haasteren Studio'?
I have created a separate page where you will find all the information about the Jan van Haasteren studio. Note – there is not a physical Studio. All draftsmen work from home, but meet regularly to discuss in the Jumbo building in Zaandam (address = Westzijde 184, 1506 EK Zaandam). The drawing of this puzzle by Rob is partly based on the Jumbo building in Zaandam.
The Jan van Haasteren studio officially includes a total of 3 (or 5 where Wilma and Mars do not officially belong to the Studio) artists:
| Name Artist | At Jan van Haasteren Studio? |
|---|---|
| Dick Heins | Ja |
| Robert Derks | Ja |
| Mars Gremmen | Ja |
| Jan van Haasteren | Ja |
| Wilma van den Bosch | Ja |
| Marco Eisinga | 2017 - 2021 and from January 2026 - present |

Explanation of this puzzle
I made a video explaining this puzzle:
Laying this puzzle
I always put all puzzles on a puzzle mat, since I often don't make them in 1 day but spread them over several days. And with a puzzle mat I can easily clean them up. I immediately sort out the straight bits:

Luckily I was able to sort out all the straight pieces and I always start by laying the edges:

I started by putting all the pieces together with the same colors and then I start puzzling. I first started with the people who walk away with the stacks of Jan van Haasteren puzzles. Then with those very difficult rows of flags that hang in the Jumbo building. Also, the two banners of 'Missing pieces' (= Jan van Haasteren Missing Pieces) and 'Shop' (= Jan van Haasteren webshop or store in Roelofarendsveen):

Then I put the mega big cake and the orchestra in their beautiful red suits:

I have saved the draughtsmen from the Jan van Haasteren studio and the people until the last to start laying, they remain the most difficult:

and finally I finished the puzzle:

Review video of this puzzle
I made a review video of this puzzle of all kinds of fun elements and with an overview of all fixed recurring elements:
What can you see on this puzzle?
Rob Derks has really incorporated a lot into this puzzle. And since it's an anniversary puzzle, I'm going to review everything. You will see the following items:
1. The Puzzle Cats

The puzzle cats have become so well known that they have been given a place on a puzzle! And they had to put that puzzle they were on during the NK puzzles of 2023. Ehh, is this a straight card? This puzzle was revealed during the NK puzzles on May 7, 2023. And who were the winners? Just the 'Puzzle Cats'! The four of them had a winning time of 50 minutes and 1 second. They have their own Facebook pagePuzzle cats'.
Nice this video when they won the NK puzzles:
2. Saskia van Haasteren + Joela Dantzig + Bernard Jan Verkoren

Who all??? I didn't know that either, but I read this in a Jan van Haasteren fan forum.
For explanation:
Saskia van Haasteren is the daughter of Jan van Haasteren and represents the interests of the brand 'Jan van Haasteren'
Joela Danzig, she is Senior Brand Manager at Jumbo
Bernard-Jan Verkoren, he is a director at Jumbo (officially 'Director Business Affairs')
3. Sander – the husband of Saskia van Haasteren

4. The three artists of the Jan van Haasteren Studio
Never seen before all three artists in one puzzle:
– Jan van Haasteren

– Rob Derks

– Dick Heins

5. The Jumbo building in Zaandam
For inspiration, Rob Derks has taken the Jumbo building in Zaandam. I don't have a picture of this right now, but very nice to know
6. JVH Missing Pieces

This is a very nice organization; people in the day care ensure that incomplete puzzles become complete again. I have written more about this on the page 'Jan van Haasteren Missing pieces'. They also have own Facebook page.
7. The Shop – JvH-puzzles.nl (?)

I'm not sure, but I assume that with the shop, the webshop in Roelofarendsveen is meant by Rene van der Zwet. And I suspect this is Rene:

How long will it take you to complete this 1000 piece puzzle?
I made the puzzle 'Midsummer Festival' in peace and it also took several days. Beautiful on a puzzle mat made on the floor in the living room. I do take the time, but not very precisely, it remains a hobby that puzzling! But to give you an idea how long it took me to complete this JvH puzzle of 1000 pieces:
- Explaining the pieces: 20 minutes
- Laying the edges = 25 minutes
- Laying the rest of the pieces = 3 hours and 55 minutes
- Which made me do this puzzle in total = 4 hours and 40 minutes. It used to take me almost always 8 hours, but I have a special tip to be able to puzzle a lot faster

About Jumbo puzzles

Jumbo (not to be confused with our supermarket Jumbo!) makes toys, games and puzzles. Jumbo, for example, has made the very well-known games such as “Human don't get annoyed” and “Stratego” and “PimPamPet”. Games that have been around for generations and are still widely played by both young and old. Jumbo has been making and developing toys since about 1900. In the early years of the company, only toys from other countries were imported to the Netherlands. However, since about 1930 it was decided to also make their own toys, at the time manufacturing wooden toys, which was very popular at the time. Almost all toys in those years were made of wood. An important spearhead was that the toys made by Jumbo had to be of very good quality; it had to be as strong as an Elephant. An elephant had to stand on it! The red elephant has been the hallmark of Jumbo's games and puzzles for years. The name Jumbo and the red elephant together form the logo from about 1935. The Jumbo elephant is drawn by Mr. Möhr. He worked at an advertising agency and regularly signed for Hausemann & Hötte. Mr Möhr was at one point commissioned to design a beautiful new elephant logo for the Hausemann & Hötte toys. The logo has changed a bit since then. For example, the eye has grown over the years and has dropped slightly more, resulting in a friendlier elephant.
In the past, the elephant was not only used in the color red, but in all kinds of colors such as blue, yellow, black, white and green. All those colors were cozy and playful. For example, one time there was a yellow elephant on the box and the other time a red one. It was usually looked at which color best matched the color of the box. It was not until the end of the 60s that the red elephant was definitively chosen. Red is a color that stands out and attracts attention.
From 1945 Jumbo also started to focus on games made of cardboard. Jumbo has therefore been a guarantee for strong quality for years! Jumbo is a unique Dutch company with a rich history, with its head office in Zaandam. About 130 employees work for Jumbo. With a turnover of €75 million, Jumbo is a medium-sized European player in toys. Jumbo has sales offices in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and the United Kingdom. They export to more than 25 countries around the world.
In 1980 Jumbo starts the production of Jan van Haasteren Puzzles.
