Yes, Mars again!

I wrote the above review about this puzzle. A real Mars fan, because he made a puzzle-bird day of it! I could not find them all, but with several puzzlers I searched to discover as many bird species as possible, perhaps Mars will reveal the missing one again

Jan van Haasteren Puzzle 'Bird Watching Day'

I have the puzzle 'Birdwatching Day' (Big Garden Birdwatch) - this is number 1110100318, issued on August 3, 2024. This puzzle was drawn by Mars Gremmen. It's this puzzle:

and this is the box:

A video about this puzzle

Laying this puzzle

I always do all the puzzles in one puzzle mat, and as you can see, I'm sorting the straight edges out.

Next I sort by color and start with the larger areas with the same colored puzzle pieces:
Jan_van_Haasteren_puzzel_Bird Watching Day_van_Mars_Gbrake_puzzel_1000pieces_-_25pct_af
What is most difficult are the trees and the gas with all the animals/birds on it:

And finally I finished the puzzle, not very difficult. I have to say quite easy, but: very nice!

But now - the online Bird Watching Day!

It is THE challenge to discover all bird species on the puzzle. And I understand that there are as many as 60 species of birds and 9 species of butterflies shown on this puzzle. That's a huge amount!

So far I have found all of these bird species and butterflies (only 42!) – perhaps Mars Gremmen can comment on this image and tell me which bird species are still missing:

Review video of this puzzle - fixed recurring elements

I made a video with fun elements from this puzzle, but also the regular recurring elements:

Once again I had a response to this video from Mars, and it is this:
“Hi Gerben, another great review! The robot bird is remotely controlled by an inventor who has been figuratively stripped by the taxman. The man on the horse is Audubon. And look what’s hanging from his bag… I drew the JvH studio artists as children. I thought they looked funnier, next to Jan getting into mischief. The man at the ring table is about to throw birdseed instead of rice over the bride and groom. The birdman with the accordion plays the rather miserable ‘Bird Dance’ according to the boy and the girl.
Twitching in this case means: “Species hunting. The targeted search for a special bird, informed by others.”

So based on this feedback from Mars I made the following additions to this puzzle:

Special item from Instagram by Mars Gremmen - 1

In a post on Mars Gremmen's Instagram he writes about John James Audubon (Aux Cayes, Haiti, April 26, 1785 - New York, January 27, 1851). This was a French-American writer, forest ranger, naturalist, ornithologist, painter and illustrator. He wrote the world famous book 'Birds of America'. Mars writes about 'John James Audubon's red flamingo' (red Flamingo hanging from his horse), which is this one:

Special item from Instagram by Mars Gremmen - 2

Nice, Mars tells in this post that he drew himself in the puzzle as a little boy; a 'twitching' Mars Gremmen. Twitch is mainly a streaming platform for games.

Special item from Instagram by Mars Gremmen - 3

Another post from Mars about his puzzle, namely that he drew the two most difficult elements in 1 puzzle (1=Horse and 2=Bicycle) and directly after each other. Only the difficult element hands is still missing, that seems to be number 3 in difficulty:

Fixed recurring elements of Mars Gvangen

I made a separate video of the regular recurring elements that Mars Gremmen always makes in his puzzles:

Funny – right on the day (August 21, 2024) that I posted this video, Mars responded to the video with the text below:
“Hi Gerben,
Some small additions to your video. Rebecca, the black woman, is a creation of Jan. If all goes well, she appears in the more recent puzzles of all studio artists. She is recognizable by the bun on her head with a red bow, the red earrings, the white pearl necklace, her yellow t-shirt and her pink floral pants. To make it complicated: sometimes she wears her hair loose and is dressed differently… In this puzzle she is standing among the birdwatchers at the fence. The person you mistook for Rebecca is the male ballet partner of the blonde ballet girl. (Those are muscles, not breasts!) They also danced in 'The Bakery' but, I can already reveal, they are missing from the next puzzle. I accidentally drew the dice correctly! I keep making mistakes with that thing! I will note down exactly which birds and butterflies are on the drawing. I will report that on my Instagram page in due time.”

So I pointed out the wrong Rebecca in the video, the correct Rebecca can be seen here:

How long will it take you to complete this 1000 piece puzzle?

I made the puzzle 'Bird day' in peace and quiet and it took me several days. Nicely made on a puzzle mat on the floor in the living room. I do take the time, but not very precisely, puzzling remains a hobby! But to give you an idea of how long it took me to make this JvH puzzle of 1000 pieces:

  • Explaining the pieces: 20 minutes
  • Laying the edges = 25 minutes
  • Laying the rest of the pieces = 3 hours and 40 minutes
  • Which made it take me a total of 4 hours and 25 minutes to complete this puzzle. I have to say it was a relatively easy puzzle! In the past it used to take me almost 8 hours, but I have a special tip to be able to puzzle a lot faster

About Jumbo puzzles

Jumbo_Logo
Jumbo (not to be confused with our supermarket Jumbo!) makes toys, games and puzzles. Jumbo, for example, has made the very well-known games such as “Human don't get annoyed” and “Stratego” and “PimPamPet”. Games that have been around for generations and are still widely played by both young and old. Jumbo has been making and developing toys since about 1900. In the early years of the company, only toys from other countries were imported to the Netherlands. However, since about 1930 it was decided to also make their own toys, at the time manufacturing wooden toys, which was very popular at the time. Almost all toys in those years were made of wood. An important spearhead was that the toys made by Jumbo had to be of very good quality; it had to be as strong as an Elephant. An elephant had to stand on it! The red elephant has been the hallmark of Jumbo's games and puzzles for years. The name Jumbo and the red elephant together form the logo from about 1935. The Jumbo elephant is drawn by Mr. Möhr. He worked at an advertising agency and regularly signed for Hausemann & Hötte. Mr Möhr was at one point commissioned to design a beautiful new elephant logo for the Hausemann & Hötte toys. The logo has changed a bit since then. For example, the eye has grown over the years and has dropped slightly more, resulting in a friendlier elephant.

In the past, the elephant was not only used in the color red, but in all kinds of colors such as blue, yellow, black, white and green. All those colors were cozy and playful. For example, one time there was a yellow elephant on the box and the other time a red one. It was usually looked at which color best matched the color of the box. It was not until the end of the 60s that the red elephant was definitively chosen. Red is a color that stands out and attracts attention.

From 1945 Jumbo also started to focus on games made of cardboard. Jumbo has therefore been a guarantee for strong quality for years! Jumbo is a unique Dutch company with a rich history, with its head office in Zaandam. About 130 employees work for Jumbo. With a turnover of €75 million, Jumbo is a medium-sized European player in toys. Jumbo has sales offices in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and the United Kingdom. They export to more than 25 countries around the world.

In 1980 Jumbo starts the production of Jan van Haasteren Puzzles.
