What's with Friday the 13th? The Unlucky Day?

Friday the 13th is often seen as an unlucky day in many Western cultures. The origins of this superstition are not entirely clear and appear to be a merger of two separate beliefs: that both Friday and the number 13 are bad luck. Friday has historically been considered an unlucky day in various cultures. One theory suggests that the idea that Fridays are unlucky may be derived from Christian traditions, where it is believed that Jesus Christ was crucified on a Friday. There are also other historical events that occurred on a Friday and are considered ominous, such as the destruction of the Knights Templar on Friday the 13th, October 1307, when the French King Philip IV ordered the arrest of the Knights Templar. The number 13 is considered unlucky for several reasons. One of these is numerology, where the number 12 is considered 'complete' (think 12 months in a year, 12 zodiac signs, 12 gods of Olympus, 12 hours of the clock), while 13 is seen as a surplus number that causes imbalance and introduces irregularity. Moreover, at Jesus' Last Supper with his disciples, including Judas, who betrayed him, there was a company of 13 people. These elements together have contributed to the modern perception of Friday the 13th as a day of bad luck and misfortune.

DescriptionCertainly rare. People sometimes call this the puzzle in the pink box. Looks a bit like it. This is 1 of 2 puzzles published by Express Gifts (other is 'Neighbours'). The box is really quite different from all kinds of other puzzle boxes. There is almost nothing on the box. The number is, but not who drew the puzzle, but again who the maker of the puzzle is (Express Gifts) - the publisher of the puzzle is not on the box of 'The Neighbours'). Express Gifts no longer exists, sometime in 2007 I found something that they were based in Preston, England. Today they are called 'Ace Gifts & Cards & Studio', with a website https://www.ace.co.uk/. They still sell puzzles on that website. But also all sorts of other things. It is a mail order company (gift catalog). The other puzzle that has also been published with a drawing by Jan van Haasteren is 'The Neighbours' (number 421243). Both have no Dutch title on this puzzle. Both puzzles have been published under Dutch title and published by Jumbo. I think Express Gifts release of 'Friday 13th' is rarer than Neighbours.

Description

De Holdson Funny World – Friday the 13th is a special and relatively rare puzzle from the New Zealand puzzle manufacturer Holdson. This edition was published in 2014 and is particularly popular among collectors, because it is offered only sporadically outside Australia and New Zealand.

A special anniversary edition

This puzzle is part of a unique series of four Funny World puzzles that all feature the number 09488 wear. The series was released on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of Holdson, which was founded in 1939. Therefore, many copies feature a special 75th Anniversary logo to be found, making this edition immediately recognizable as an anniversary puzzle.

The image was designed by Jan van Haasteren, whose humorous and busy drawing style is known worldwide among puzzle enthusiasts. Although the image is also known from other editions, such as a Jumbo version, the Holdson edition has its own collector's value thanks to its limited availability and the anniversary background.

Hard to obtain

For collectors in Europe, this puzzle is often difficult to obtain. Copies usually have to be imported from New Zealand or Australia, meaning shipping costs, import duties, and longer delivery times often play a role. Precisely because of this, this edition is not often offered on the second-hand market.

Part of the blue Funny World series

The puzzle belongs to the well-known blue boxes of the Funny World series. Between 2014 and 2026, a total of 40 puzzles. In all years, four new puzzles were released; however, only in the years 2019 and 2025 was no set of four puzzles (of 1000 pieces) released.

Features

  • Released in 2014
  • Part of it Holdson's 75th anniversary
  • Illustration of Jan van Haasteren
  • Belongs to the Funny World series
  • Rare edition outside Australia and New Zealand
  • Standard puzzle piece shapes
  • Often featuring a special anniversary logo on sealed copies

A sought-after collector's item

For collectors of Jan van Haasteren puzzles and international editions, is Friday the 13th An interesting collector's item that does not often turn up. The combination of the anniversary edition, limited availability, and the popular illustration by Jan van Haasteren makes this puzzle a special addition to any collection.

Laying the puzzle

I often do the puzzles on one puzzle mat of puzzle folder. I then sort the straight pieces first and place the edges
rsz_jan_van_haasteren_'friday_de_13th'_1000_pieces_-_box_and_straight_edges
I then sorted all the pieces with the same colors and started with the cars and the pinkest colored house. I must say that I have rarely seen such loose pieces of the puzzle as in this issue of Express Gifts. They fall apart very easily and you cannot drag a set of puzzle pieces because then they will fall apart.

It is clear in this puzzle that many accidents happen on Friday the 13th – a lot goes wrong. I was able to finish the houses:

And finally I finished the puzzle. There are many recurring elements to see, be sure to watch my video (below) about this:

How long will it take you to complete this 1000 piece puzzle?

I completed the 'Friday 13th' puzzle in peace and quiet and it took me several days to complete it. Beautifully made on a puzzle mat on the floor in the living room. I do record the time, but not very precisely, puzzling remains a hobby! But to give an idea of how long it took me to complete this JvH puzzle of 1000 pieces:

About Jumbo puzzles

Jumbo_Logo
Jumbo (not to be confused with our supermarket Jumbo!) makes toys, games and puzzles. Jumbo, for example, has made the very well-known games such as “Human don't get annoyed” and “Stratego” and “PimPamPet”. Games that have been around for generations and are still widely played by both young and old. Jumbo has been making and developing toys since about 1900. In the early years of the company, only toys from other countries were imported to the Netherlands. However, since about 1930 it was decided to also make their own toys, at the time manufacturing wooden toys, which was very popular at the time. Almost all toys in those years were made of wood. An important spearhead was that the toys made by Jumbo had to be of very good quality; it had to be as strong as an Elephant. An elephant had to stand on it! The red elephant has been the hallmark of Jumbo's games and puzzles for years. The name Jumbo and the red elephant together form the logo from about 1935. The Jumbo elephant is drawn by Mr. Möhr. He worked at an advertising agency and regularly signed for Hausemann & Hötte. Mr Möhr was at one point commissioned to design a beautiful new elephant logo for the Hausemann & Hötte toys. The logo has changed a bit since then. For example, the eye has grown over the years and has dropped slightly more, resulting in a friendlier elephant.

In the past, the elephant was not only used in the color red, but in all kinds of colors such as blue, yellow, black, white and green. All those colors were cozy and playful. For example, one time there was a yellow elephant on the box and the other time a red one. It was usually looked at which color best matched the color of the box. It was not until the end of the 60s that the red elephant was definitively chosen. Red is a color that stands out and attracts attention.

From 1945 Jumbo also started to focus on games made of cardboard. Jumbo has therefore been a guarantee for strong quality for years! Jumbo is a unique Dutch company with a rich history, with its head office in Zaandam. About 130 employees work for Jumbo. With a turnover of €75 million, Jumbo is a medium-sized European player in toys. Jumbo has sales offices in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and the United Kingdom. They export to more than 25 countries around the world.

In 1980 Jumbo starts the production of Jan van Haasteren Puzzles.

Very nice - Express Gifts edition

I wrote the above review and created this puzzle in March 2024 with the release of Express Gifts. Those are different puzzle pieces (very thin!), but what a fun puzzle to make, really an old-fashioned Jan van Haasteren. And: Friday the 13th is of course a day on which there is a lot of unhappiness or many accidents happen! See for yourself what kind of chaos it is
